Guest Blogger Captain

I feel so stupid. I got caught red handed. Yes, I saw the brand new bag of cat food come in the house. I smelled the delicious morsels within that bag. Then I waited until my pet human was in the other room. And I began to climb up to the bag. Now I realize that I am not the most graceful cat in the world, but I can get be quite stealthy when I choose. I was very careful, and that is why I cannot understand how she caught me. I began to chew the new bag open. How did she know that I was attempting to open the new bag of food? But the next thing I knew I was being asked in an extremely loud voice “what are you doing?” And then she told me to get down. And it wasn’t nice the way she said it at all.

I don’t understand why I can’t open a new bag of food when it comes in the house. It’s my food after all. Do any of my fellow felines have troubles like this? I do need advice on how to handle this situation.

Marie Antoinette's Helicopter

So does anybody recognize this lady?

Marie Antoinette - 1762

It's Marie Antoinette. You remember her from your history classes don't you? The Queen of France who met an awful end. But while she was alive she was not only the Queen of France, but she was also the Queen of Bling. It's probably part of the reason for her horrible end. But anyway, artist Joana Vasconcelos has envisioned what Marie's ride would be like if she was a modern day Queen of Bling. And this is the artist's vision.

Can't you just picture this sitting in the courtyard at Versailles?

I don't know about the rest my faithful followers, but I want one!

Live From Seattle It's True Holland

Okay, remember back in the 90’s when there were all of those great Seattle bands? Okay, some of you may not remember, but trust me there were a lot of them. They had that great guitar sound to them. You know the grunge thing. Then we didn’t hear too much out of Seattle for a while. But there’s good news there is another great band out of Seattle called True Holland. Let me tell ya these guys are great!

When I heard their song Heavy, (punch the video button and listen to their song you won’t be disappointed) I thought that guitar sounds great. I loved the song!

Heavy by True Holland

Another great song they have on their first album is World on a Wire. I liked it from the get go. The opening is fantastic! If you want to hear it check out the song on soundcloud. World on a Wire (click on the title)

True HollandThen I looked up a little more information about the band. I found them on reverbnation. Here's the link for that True Holland They aren’t just a band that sits in a studio and records cds, they are a band that actually plays live. They have toured for the past couple of years playing the Seattle area.  But they also have a cd called True Holland that is available on amazon. And there is even better news the band is currently working on their next cd. And it should be released this year.

Another thing going on with the band is they are sponsoring a giveaway. And this isn’t just a little giveaway it’s a really cool giveaway. It’s a guitar! So how do you win this guitar? I’m gonna tell ya. Go to the bands facebook (True Holland Facebook)and like the band. Listen to the video on their page about the giveaway. Then share the giveaway with your friends on facebook. Whatcha Been Watchin?

Our Idiot Brother has to be one of the funnest movies I’ve seen recently. From the opening scene where Ned, an organic gardener, provides a uniformed sheriff with illegal substances, because the officer said he needed something to help him relax to the end of the film where he opens a shop that sells handmade candles. The movie is full of fun little incidents. If the world was full of more Ned’s it would certainly be a nicer place.

Heathers is a movie I’ve always loved. You know the one with Winona Ryder and Christian Slater. It’s the story of a girl who tries to fit in, but just can’t. She hooks up with a rebellious boyfriend, who is a little more rebellious than she realized. I really do love this movie. Some of it is so beyond reality. But I have to admit this time I found it to be a little disturbing. You know for some reason this time the ending really made me think of Columbine. Somehow when the movie was made it was just a crazy ending, but years later it’s a little disturbing.

Jane By Design is the ABC Family show that was on for one season and then it got cancelled. But the shows I’ve watched are really good. Jane is a smart teenager, who happens to land a job in the fashion industry by mistake. She lives a double life one in the fashion industry, and the other one in high school. It always seems like the shows that I really enjoy get cancelled far too soon, while shows I don’t enjoy watching stay on season after season.

Three Reasons I Want to Know How To Knit

Okay, I really do want to learn to knit. And my reasons for wanting to learn how to knit probably aren’t the same as most people. Most people want to learn to make scarves and sweaters for themselves or for their loved ones, but the real reason I want to learn to knit is yarn bombing.

For those of you who don’t know what yarn bombing is, Yarn bombing is going out and plastering something in the world with a beautiful item you’ve knit. It’s absolutely amazing. So here are the three reasons I want to learn to knit.

Isn't that tank just the coolest? Let me know if any of you can knit and if any of you have yarn bombed.

Guest Blogger Smokey

My roommate Captain has spends so much time trying to get attention from our pet human. It’s really quite silly. I prefer quality over quantity when it comes to attention. I have tried to explain to him that he is going about things all wrong. He doesn’t realize that all you have to do is demand attention occasionally. I go about this by standing on my back legs and putting my front paws on my pet’s legs when she is standing up. She always pets me, and provides me with attention when I do this. I do believe that I look quite handsome when I do this too. This is part of the reason she pays attention to me when I do this.

My second extremely successful strategy is to slowly move my paw to her face when she is sleeping. I always get attention when I do this. But I do have to admit sometimes it is not the attention I want. Sometimes it is quite bad attention, but I still continue to do it because most of the time it is so positive. I often get to snuggle up to my pet and she pets me just to get me to stop. Is that brilliant or what? But my roommate still believes that he must constantly be right next to our pet. I believe there are times that this just aggravates our pet. I hate to see her in this upset because sometimes she just tells us all to leave her alone. How do I get Captain to understand that his behavior does affect all of us in a negative fashion? Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get him to understand this? Please share these suggestions with me because he is so hardheaded at times, and I would like this minor problem resolved.

Soul Sanctuary Music Review

There’s one think all of you should know I like Heavy Metal. So when I heard this band called Soul Sanctuary from England. I thought I would share a review of their music.

Image of Soul Sanctuary Poster 2011
Soul Sanctuary

The first thing you need to know is it is Heavy Metal. Soul Sanctuary’s music is fast paced, and loud. The music will make you want to exert some energy. And that’s one of the appeals it has for me. If I’m cleaning the house, this music helps me do it faster. But the other thing I really like about this band is their lyrics. They aren’t the typical pop make you feel good lyrics. The lyrics of their songs make you think.

I really like their song Afterlife. Why you may ask? The lyrics bring up that age old question will things ever change? Will it happen in my lifetime? The band takes a look at the world around them, and they want something to change even though they aren’t sure if it will ever happen. The band packs a lot of energy in this song too. It has great guitar work, and the end result is you will want to start dancing.

Another song that I like is Scars of You. It reminds me of a bad relationship. I’m not sure that is what the band had in mind, but that is what I thought of. You know the relationships that you fight to make work, but it just won’t. The one that leaves you saying I’m not the person I was before that relationship began. The lyrics ask is it hopeless to try and change what just wasn’t meant to be? Haven’t we all asked that about one relationship or another?

Soul Sanctuary’s members include:  Luke Gibson, Michael Burrough, Edward Stevens, Jamie Hicks, Anthony Montague, and Paul Gooding. And they are influenced by bands like Metallica, Slipknot, and Bullet for My Valentine. So if you like those bands you will definitely like their music. The band has also been around for a few since 2007ish, and they have developed a loyal following. And they have taken their music seriously. They have played with Sonic Syndicate and Blowsight. And they have their own records label Forsake Memory Records. The band also has a great website where you can find more of their music, and news about the band. I recommend that you visit to learn more about Soul Sanctuary. You can visit the site at www.soulsanctuarymusic.com, and let me know what you think of their music.

Spring Dreams

Even though the weather doesn't seem very spring like. It's currently 27 degrees. I've been dreaming about spring time activities. One of them is kite flying. I love flying kites. It always brings out the kid in everyone. So I thought I would share a poem about kite flying.

A Kite for Aibhín
After 'L'Aquilone' by Giovanni Pascoli (1855-1912)
Air from another life and time and place,

Pale blue heavenly air is supporting

A white wing beating high against the breeze,

And yes, it is a kite! As when one afternoon
All of us there trooped out
Among the briar hedges and stripped thorn,
I take my stand again, halt opposite

Anahorish Hill to scan the blue,

Back in that field to launch our long-tailed comet.
And now it hovers, tugs, veers, dives askew,

Lifts itself, goes with the wind until
It rises to loud cheers from us below.

Rises, and my hand is like a spindle
Unspooling, the kite a thin-stemmed flower

Climbing and carrying, carrying farther, higher

The longing in the breast and planted feet
And gazing face and heart of the kite flier

Until string breaks and—separate, elate—

The kite takes off, itself alone, a windfall.

Liebster Awards

Yeah, baby, I got nominated for a Liebster Award. I’m sure there are those of you who are wondering what is this woman talking about a Liebster Award? What is that?

The Liebster Award is a blog award given to small blogs. You have to be nominated by another blogger. You have to answer 11 questions about yourself, and you have to nominate 11 other small bloggers. So that is the gist of the award.

I was nominated by Jacquelyn over at The Non-Martha Momma.
It’s a great blog, for all the unmartha types out there. She writes about her everyday life, and she has giveaways.

So off to answering the questions.

What's your hair color? Is it your natural color? If you were to dye it another color what color would it be?

My hair is dishwater blonde now, and it is starting to get a touch of gray, but it has always had lots of different colors in it naturally. Reds, blonde, and a little brown it has some natural highlights.

If you were an animal, what would you be and why?

I suppose this will be a big surprise to my faithful followers, but I would choose to be a cat. The reason is cats aren’t really pets, they have pets called humans.

Do you sleep with socks on or off? (I know...weird question, but my husband thinks I'm weird for always sleeping with socks, even in the dead of summer, so just curious)

It depends on what time of year it is. In the winter I sleep with my socks on. I just hate being cold. And in the summer I go sockless. To tell you the truth I prefer not to wear them to bed, but I absolutely hate being cold.

Do you like board games? If so what are some of your favorites?

I can’t stand playing board games, they just bore me to death.

What time do you normally go to bed and what time do you normally wake up?

I normally go to bed at 6:30pm and I get up at 2:30am so I can get to work at 4:00am. It kind of sucks, but hey you do what you gotta do sometimes.

Are you having a hard time answering my questions, coming up with 11 random facts about you, and asking 11 questions to your nominees?

Answering the questions isn’t difficult it’s the thinking up 11 questions for my nominees that is difficult.

Do you have a lucky number?

My lucky number is five!

Do you have any children? If so, how many and what ages? How many children (or how many more children) do you plan/want to have?

No children unless you count the cats.

What is your favorite season?

My favorite season is summer. It’s just a hassle putting on a coat, hat, and gloves.

Questions for the nominees

Why did you start blogging?

What is your favorite color?

Do you have pets?

Which do you prefer sweet or sour?

What’s your favorite song?

What do you like most about the place you live?

If you could be doing anything at all today what would it be?

What do you like most about blogging?

What do you like least about blogging?

What is your dream job?

What is something that really makes you happy?
A the nominees are:
Congrats to the nominees! If you choose to accept this award please remember to nominate 11 other bloggers with less then 200 followers.

Guest Blogger Bobaloo

I have been blamed for something that occurred at the house. My pet human believes that I did it on purpose, and she has been a little cool towards me today. It really wasn’t my fault. You see I am feeling very friendly right now, and I saw the lamp sitting there. So I decided to get up on the table and rub against it. You know, just let the lamp know exactly how great I think it is. Now I do know that my pet human doesn’t like it when I do this, but she wasn’t home so I decided to do it anyway. I thought she would never know. So as I rubbed up against the lamp, it kind of moved a little. I thought to myself great. The lamp thinks I’m as great too. And then it moved a lot more. And then it fell over. And let’s just say it made a large noise, and there was a little mess. I left the mess for my pet human to clean up. I know that she really does enjoy taking care of me, and doesn’t mind if I make a mess at all. I expected for her to say Bobaloo you’re such a good girl, but instead she said Bobaloo what did you do? And then I got the scolding of the year. No matter what I do I cannot convince my pet human that I did not knock the lamp over on purpose. Can anyone tell me how to get my pet human to understand that I was simply being friendly?  I so want my human to tell me I am a good girl again.

Things That Have Made This Week Grand

Seeing this little three year boy run into the gas station with a one dollar bill in his hand. His grandmother was behind him. The look of excitement on his face was precious. When was the last time a dollar bill made any of us that excited?

Coming home to a knocked over lamp, and honestly being able to say the cats are the one who create all the mess in the house. It really isn’t me.

Being able to help Jessica out with her Flairware Boutique Giveaway. It always feels good to help someone else out doesn’t it? Isn't her stuff cute?

Go to the Facebook page and press like in order to enter the giveaway.

Showing up at the wrong work site, realizing that this could be really bad when I get to the one I am actually supposed to be at, and then when I do get there everything was just fine. I hate how my work schedule constantly changes.
Getting a phone call from an old friend, asking if I’d like to go out to lunch. It was great to catch up on what is going on with her. I haven’t seen her in months.

Feta Lemon Spread

“When life gives you lemons make grape juice and sit back and watch the world ask how you did it.”
― Tori Truax

Well, since I couldn't figure out how to make grape juice from the lemons I had. I made Feta Lemon Spread instead.

Doesn't it look tasty? So this is what you do.

Crumble or grate up six ounces of feta cheese. Stir in a 1/4 cup of plain Greek yogurt. Add about a teaspoon of lemon zest. Then add some freshly squeezed lemon juice. Dump in about 1/2 teaspoon of oregano, a dash of salt and a dash of white pepper. Mix it up, and you have a spread with a little bit of a tart taste to it. And now you don't just have to make lemonade when life gives you lemons. Now you can Feta Lemon Spread too.

Guest Blogger Captain

I think that there may be something wrong with my pet human. It seems to be her memory. I believe she has forgotten my name. She looks at me and calls me Nosy Rosy. While my nose is a rosy color, Nosy Rosy is not my name. My name is Captain. She used to call me Captain all the time, and still does at times. But what is up with this Nosy Rosy thing? I do have to admit I have noticed a pattern to being called Nosy Rosy. Every time I begin to explore my home or look at something I hear this name. Is there some connection between my explorations and the new name? Or is it just a coincidence? I’m unsure, but I do believe that I should make an appointment for my pet human with her doctor to see if there is anything seriously wrong with her memory. And perhaps her doctor can explain this odd behavior.  Anyway, I do have to put an end to this name she has been calling me, I don’t like it. Please let me know if any of you have had a similar experience. Aren't humans perplexing?

Whatcha Been Reading?

I’ve been reading a little bit here in the past week, and I thought it was time to share some of the books I’ve been reading and what I think about those books.

The Maynwarings by Digger Cartwright

This book is a western set in the reconstruction era in Nevada. And I have to admit as I read this book this is what came to mind.
Theme song to Bonanza

In case you’re not old enough to remember this. It’s the theme song to Bonanza. The book actually did make me think of the show. The Maynwarings are a ranch family that has been very successful. They are honest and always willing to help those in need. But then there enters an evil outsider, who doesn’t have the best interests of the community in mind. There is a murder, a lynching, and yes a conspiracy. The book is full of action. And one of the things I really liked about the book was there was a strong, independent, intelligent female character in this book. If you like mysteries or westerns this book is a read for you.

Six-Figure Musician - How to Sell More Music, Get More People to Your Shows, and Make More Money in the Music Business (Music Marketing [dot] com Presents) by David Hooper

This book is a must read for anyone who wants to be a professional musician. But the book is also a valuable resource for anyone starting a small creative business. The book offers all sorts of advice. One of the most important one I thought was you have fans take care of them. So check out this book you guys.

Minority Bolshevism by Zuriel Redwood

In my opinion in order to be a well-informed person you have to look at all points of view. So I read this book. The book is geared toward the conservative side of American politics. While I don’t agree with most things the author presents in the book. He does address many issues facing America at this time. And kudos for him for doing this. The book is well thought out, and I do respect anyone who puts themselves out there for criticism. He did present some plans that do deserve some further discussion in my opinion. I guess one of the reasons I liked the book was it challenged me to look at the world from another perspective. If you’re politics are to the right you’ll like the book. And if you’re politics are to the left well you may not like this book, but it is worth taking a look at so that you can present intelligent discussions.

So that’s what I’ve been reading this week. Let me know what you’ve been reading, and if you think I might like it.

Fifty

Most people who hear the word fifty cringe. But nope not me. Today fifty is a wonderful word. I’m not talking about turning fifty years old. Because it’s not my birthday. I’m talking about having fifty followers. That’s a milestone for me.  When I saw the number fifty behind followers, and I thought to myself wow. Fifty people are actually looking at my work on a regular basis.

When I really started this blog, I didn’t really think anyone would look at it. But part of me believed that I could put together something decent to read. In case you haven’t noticed I do look at the world a little bit differently than many people so I knew it probably wouldn’t be everybody’s cup of tea. And there was the little problem with I really don’t have background writing or taking photos. But I was pleasantly surprised when people informed me that they liked my writing style. I mean I was really surprised.

And I’ve learned a lot while I’ve blogged. I’ve learned that photos are a real challenge for me. They never seem to come out the way I planned. I’ve slowly begun to learn about html. It’s another one of those great challenges for me. I’ve learned that there a lot more people in the world with interests that are similar to mine than I ever dreamed. And I don’t have ordinary interests.

So where does all of this go from here. I don’t know exactly. But I do know that there are more great things coming. I am meeting some really cool people with great interests that are widening my diverse interests. Some of the people I automatically have something in common with and some of the people are people that I am learning new things from. Isn’t that cool? And no matter where things go with this project. I’m going to have fun with it.

Wednesday Want List

It's Wednesday so it's time to pick out some of the items I really want today!

Upper Left-Swarovski rainbow evening purse by Morticia Rose Designs It's blue and it sparkles so it's a definite must for me.
Second left-Marie Antoinette's Clutch Bag Crystal Bridal Wedding Clutch by Beholden Bridal
It's so pretty with the lace and crystal.
Third left-Marie Antoinette inspired blue and silver sparkling clutch bag by Everlastinglifashion. I really love the blue and silver on this purse. It has a lot of lace, and it's oh, so pretty.
Lower Left-Peter Pan Book Purse by NovelCreations Book purses are so cute I think. And well I just can't resist one that is made from the Peter Pan book cover.
Upper right-Chrysanthemum & Crane Coine Purse by Cotton Times I noticed that this is the only purse that doesn't contain the blue after I put this collage together. I'm a big fan of change purses. And the crane on this one is so elegant.
Second Right-Whiting and Davis Mesh purse in ScoutsAttic shop. The purse has enamel paint, and it looks great.
Third right-Marie Masquerade Zippered Pouch by HautTotes I guess blue wasn't the only thing on my mind when I put this together either. This has a picture of Marie Antoinette on a zippered pouch. Very cute!
Bottom Right-1960's Navy Blue Koret Purse RealGoneCatClothes I really like the boxy shape of this purse. And I really like the metal twist clasp.

Well let me know what you think of the purses. And give some of the shops a visit to see what else they have.

Thrifty Finds

So I'm always talking about how I scored big when I go thrifting. And I usually do pretty good. So I thought I would share a couple of the items I found when I went out thrifting this week.

One very cute dress from Vera Wang's Simply Vera collection. The picture just doesn't do it justice.

The pattern on this fabric is so fantastic. I love the birds and the flowers on the fabric. Along with the blue and yellow coloring in the pattern. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with the fabric, but I had to have it.

I love the colors in this one. A dark purple background with pink, white, and blue. A geometric pattern and it's all on a vintage nylon shirt. I mean come on how much more can you ask for?

And well I just needed something else to sit around my house. It's not like I don't have enough nick nacks. But I loved the little purple flowers on this candy dish. So I got it.

I saw this purse, and I thought I used to have one just like this. It's a great purse. And I love how the trim on the front has a little ruffling to it.

So let me know what you think of the my thrift finds for the week.

Smokey's Oscar List

Last week was the Oscars. I believe that this show is designed for humans and not felines. As I viewed the winners there were no felines visible, and it saddened me. There are so many great feline feature films. Why aren’t they receiving awards like the humans do? So I’ve comprised a small list of movies featuring felines and other animals that deserved an Oscar.

First of the group is my favorite. It should have received best animated film that year. The winner should have been Puss in Boots. Puss in Boots is a well groomed cat deserving more attention.

The second film I would propose is in the best actor category. D.C. from That Darn Cat really did a fine job of leading those humans on a chase. He showed humans just how smart felines really are.

And the last movie is not really about felines, but it did feature a human who truly understand animals. He talked with animals. The film I nominate for a best picture award is Doctor Doolittle. The acting by the animals in this film was top notch. It’s a pity that the humans did not recognize this fine film’s qualities. I believe that it advanced human and animal relations by leaps and bounds.

Do any of you wonderful readers have any other suggestions on films that should have at some point in time been included in the Oscars? There must be some other feline films that I have not recognized. Please let me know if you do know of others, and we can discuss whether or not I should add them to my Oscar list.

Things That Have Made This Week Grand

We didn’t get as much snow and ice as the weather man predicted. By the way, how do you become a weather man? Where else can you make so many mistakes, and still be employed?

I got off of work earlier than I planned this morning! Hurray! It’s always awesome to get a couple extra hours of free time on your last work day.

I figured out that I really have lost weight. Thank you to my employer. All that heavy lifting has paid off. I can eat pretty much eat what I want because I’m more active the weight is falling off. Woohoo!

I got to buy a new to me pair of pants and they are a size smaller than I used to wear, and they are a little loose. Once again it’s the increased activity. And once again thank you new employer!

I get to go out for Indian food tonight. It’s my absolute favorite! So I am so excited.

I scored big time when I went thrifting this week. Doesn’t that always feel great?

My cat didn’t jump on me when I was sleeping last night. He carefully stepped on me when he decided to lie on top of me when I was sleeping. Thank you Captain for not startling me in the middle of the night like you usually do. You’re just too big to leap on top of me. He weighs 20 lbs.

I gained new followers for this blog. Thanks to each and every one of my followers. You totally rock!

Hot Bacon Slaw

Yep, I wanted a hamburger and some cole slaw. But I didn’t want the average cole slaw that you pick up at the store. I wanted something a little different. So I made Hot Bacon Slaw. Now I know there are some of my readers thinking isn’t hot slow just cooked cabbage. And my answer is umm, yeah in a way it is. But it is slaw with a little flare, and it has a little different taste to it. So here’s how you make it.

Fry up a couple bacon slices. Yes in a frying pan. When the bacon is cooked, take it out of the pan and set it aside. Next add a package of ready to eat coleslaw to the pan you cooked the bacon in. Leave those drippings in the pan. That adds flavor to your slaw. Now sauté your slaw mix over a medium heat. Add a ¼ cup of balsamic vinegar, 1 ½ tablespoons brown sugar, 3 tablespoons water, ½ a teaspoon seasoned salt, and ¼ teaspoon ground red pepper. (If you want a little extra kick you can add extra red pepper.) Cook it for about 1 minute while you’re stirring it. You want to make sure that all of those ingredients get mixed well.  Then crumble in the bacon slices.

See that wasn’t too difficult and it tastes great.
