New Jerusalem News

When I read the description of the book New Jerusalem News, I was all over it. I received  a copy of the book in exchange for the review. And I'm going to let you know what I think of it.

The Story

The tourist season has come to a close on Cape Cod. And it is time for Dominick to decide where he will spend the winter. He has no permanent home, but he knows the rules for being a great house guest. He's decided that it's been a long time since he spent a winter up north. So he will spend the winter on the island. As the story unfolds he finds himself navigating through the lives of the quirky individuals on the island. He finds that there is much more going on during the winter than he thought there would be. And he finds that he is getting a little more attached to some of these people than his drifter lifestyle allows.

What I Liked About This Book

I really enjoyed that this book focused on what living on an island is like. Living on an island is much different than living on the mainland. And living in a tourist town is even more different. Islands are full of interesting people. People come and go all the time. But this book focuses on the people that stay on the island year round. It shows you how an outsider views them. It shows the good, the bad and the ugly of island life. People are friendly, but being stuck on an island does develop some odd habits. It's like living in any small community I guess.

The book also shows how separated we often become from the people who raised us. It is normal for all of us to move on from the lives of our parents, but then that time comes when our parents need a little more help from us. And then we hit that problem that many of us have faced. How do you provide assistance to individuals we don't know very well anymore? And the even bigger question how do you help those individuals when they don't want your help?

Dominick is an interesting character who somehow knows how to navigate through the life of being a drifter. He is likeable, and he is intelligent. I would have no problem reading about more of Dominick's adventures in the future.

Who Should Read This Book

If you have ever lived in a tourist area, you will probably enjoy reading this book. Like I said it does show what life is like after the tourist leave. You may also enjoy this book, if you have ever just wanted to live the life of a wanderer. It will either satisfy some of your wanderlust, or it will increase it. And if you just want to read a well written and intelligent book that doesn't fit into the mainstream niches you will probably enjoy this book.

Disclaimer: As I stated earlier in the review I received a free copy of the book in exchange for a review, but you can believe what you read because the opinions are mine and mine alone.
