The Porch

This is Captain writing today. I have decided to tell you about my new favorite place. My new favorite place is the porch. Since my pet human doesn't really like it when I venture outdoors, the porch is the closest that I can get to the great outdoors.

My pet is a little more understanding of my desire to be on the porch. But that does not mean that she is always willing to cooperate with my plan to sit in the sun and watch the birds from this wonderful place. So being the intelligent feline that I am I have devised plans for obtaining more time on the porch.

It begins this way. Each day there is something called the mail that arrives at our home. My good and obedient pet goes to the porch each day to get the mail. I follow her to the door each day. She often tries to tell me that I don't want to go out right now. It's her way of trying to convince me to do what she wants. But it doesn't work.

The next step in gaining freedom on the porch is waiting for a moment. The perfect moment is the moment I am looking for. Now there are those asking you when is the perfect moment? The perfect moment is when my darling pet opens the door and enters with her hands full of mail. That is the time when I can always make my escape to the porch. You see my pet is always paying more attention to what is in her hands than to what I am doing. And I am able to escape for a period of time to watch the birds and recline in the sun.

Once again let me know what you think of the pictures. And have you been visiting any street fairs this fall?

Super Simple Harry Potter Wand

Earlier this week I created a post called This Monday's Motivators. I showed a picture of a couple of items that I found while I was out walking. I wondered what should I do with them. And I came up with a Harry Potter wand. I was a little inspired by a wand my friend made for me last January for Harry Potter Day at Sweets So Geek. You can see a picture of it if you visit my post Staring At A Blank Page.

The first of the items I used was a stick that I found while I was out walking. I peeled off the bark. So it would be a nice looking wand. The second item I used was a piece of glass that I found last week. It looked a little bit like a crystal to me. So I picked it up.

So I had the two key elements to making a wand. I wanted to do something quick and easy. So I pulled out the glue gun. And I glued the piece of glass to the end of the stick. Then I looked around the house. I had some old hemp cord around and I used it to wrap around where the glue was to give it a more natural feel. It was that simple to make.
And while it's not as fancy as my friends wand, I did find a use for some of the items that I have found. And as time goes by I can look for ways to embellish it a little if I want. Or I can just leave it.

So what have you been creating recently?

This Monday's Motivators

Like always I have a little trouble getting moving on Monday. Even though Monday is the day after hump day for my work week. But these are the things that are motivating me this week. And a few of the things I am grateful for this week. Somehow the more grateful I am for the things that are going on around me the more motivated I become.

Those Walks

I have the habit of picking up little things I see when I go on those walks. They just catch my eye, and I want to keep them. Then I think to myself what will I do or make with these items. Later this week you'll be able to see what I was motivated to do with a stick and a piece of glass I found.

Street Fairs

Late fall is the time for some great street fairs in Indiana. I went to the Bluffton Street Fair this week. I got the greatest fudge I've tasted in ages. It is Amaretto chocolate fudge. I'm going to hunt down the shop that makes it and visit again. It was only $4.00 too. I also got some pretty cool night pictures which you will see later in the week.

Bath Bombs

I don't know why, but making bath bombs just makes me feel great. I don't know if it is the different scents. Or if it is the little bit of chemistry that is involved in making them. But it is so much fun. And it is relaxing. I can't wait to make a batch on my days off.

Those Goals I Set

At the beginning of each month I set goals for the month. Believe it or not these little goals do motivate me to get a few things accomplished that I normally wouldn't. I'm glad that I've started doing them. If you want to see some of the goals that I set for this last month check out my post Where Did It Go?

So what is motivating you this week?

Silence Please

The other night I was at work, and well there was this woman that I actually like. But she talks a lot. And when I mean a lot I mean non-stop. It normally doesn't bother me because she talks about her day to day life. And there is a lot going on in her life. So it is entertaining. She is just a very verbal person.

But that night I was in no mood to listen to her. I don't really know why. Just the sound of her voice was annoying me that night. I just wanted to ask her do you ever shut up? I already knew the answer to that question. The answer is no she never does shut up. Not really and if she is quiet you wonder if she is feeling okay.

I've tried to figure out what it was that bothered me so much that night. And all I could think is I was craving silence. There are just times when I don't want to listen to anyone. And the statement I want to make is silence please.

Life Lessons Learned From The Walking Dead

The new season of The Walking Dead will begin next month. And of course we all waiting to see what happens after last seasons cliffhanger. But there are a few things I have learned over the past seasons that apply to everyday life.

Always Buy Good Shoes

With all the walking and running that people have to do during the zombie apocalypse, you need a good pair of shoes. They need to be rugged, comfortable, and most importantly they need to fit will. And if you find some really good shoes hang on to them.

Food Is Everywhere

In season six Carol bakes cookies. Everybody who has watched the show knows she is a great cook. But this episode showed just how creative she really is. She makes cookies out of acorns and beets. Yeah, there are other ingredients, but she scrounged around and found a way to make something that tasted great out of what was available.

Weapons

Many things can be turned into a weapon. We always hear about gun control. Keep in mind that Morgan's weapon of choice is a stick. And that stick is deadly.

Prepare For Everything

Learn as much as you can whenever you can. Eugene is an unlikely person to survive the zombies, but he has knowledge of odd things that have helped him survive. Well some of his knowledge including the ability to get others to protect him. But hey he has turned into a true survivor in the past couple of years.

Where You Start Doesn't Dictate Where You Will Go

Before the world was taken over by zombies, Glenn was a pizza delivery guy. He has grown into a key figure in the survival of the community he belongs to. He defends it. And his opinion is valued in decision making. Who would have thought the pizza guy could so important?

Enjoy Every Moment

Over the seasons we have seen so many people come onto the show. We loved so many of them. And then life happened. They were no longer alive. Enjoy the people in your life because you never know when they will be gone.

Spicy Chimichurri Pickled Vegetables

Fall is full of vegetables. So many that we need to look for new ways to prepare these vegetables. And of course we want to be able to keep them for awhile. Here is a super easy recipe for those vegetables that has a little bit of kick.

Here's What You Need

2 chopped carrots
1 yellow pepper
1 head of cauliflower
1/2 cup fresh green beans
8 whole cloves of garlic
1 cup red wine vinegar
1 lemon juiced
2 tablespoons honey
1 tablespoon crushed red pepper flakes
1 teaspoon ground coriander
2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon black pepper
2 tablespoons fresh oregano chopped
3 tablespoons fresh parsley chopped

Here's What You Do

Place the garlic cloves, oregano and parsley in the bottom of your container. Pack the rest of the vegetables tightly into the jar.

In a saucepan, mix the vinegar, lemon juice, honey, chili flakes, coriander, salt and pepper and bring to a boil. Remove from heat and pour the mix over the vegetables. Add hot water until the liquid covers the vegetables. Let cool, then put the lid on tightly and place in the refrigerator. Allow the vegetables to pickle for about a week, shaking the jar occasionally.

This goes great with burgers, or any good sandwich.

Did You Know?

Cauliflower contains properties that help protect your stomach lining? And that it contains 3g of the daily fiber you need?

Wake Up Wednesday 139

Wednesday's seem to be a day when I give a little update about my life. This week has been one of those weeks when I feel like I am truly lucky. I have no drama in my life at the moment and boy am I thankful. There is drama going on around me but I am fortunate enough to be a spectator this time. I'm not the center of this drama. Thank goodness!

Decorating Ideas for Small White Pumpkins
Petticoat Junktion

Small white pumpkins are one of my favorite pumpkin types. There have been a lot of new varieties show up lately at the local vegetable/flower market. The bumpy ones called peanut pumpkins are kind of cool. I bought this bunch of white pumpkins at a local pumpkin patch a couple of weeks ago.

The mangos have been plentiful this year and I have been enjoying them every chance I get. I made this Sweet Chili Mango Sauce to go with some grilled chicken I was making for dinner one night.

Easy Pumpkin Cheeseball
Crafts a la Mode

The Fall season for food has started.

I saw a this darling pumpkin cheeseball over at Family Fresh Meals and decided I really had to make this for a family gathering (it was a BIG HIT - how did you do that?). This is a variation on a cheeseball that I have been making for years with softened cream cheese and shredded cheddar cheese. The orange color? It comes from crushed up Doritos.

This peanut butter chocolate banana bread is made with Reese’s peanut butter chocolate spread and a whole lotta deliciousness. It’s a pound cake worthy of the name.

I really thought that this cold winter would be really hard on me (I recently moved from Las Vegas to Northern Utah). It kind of has, but the cold is VERY inspirational! I have needed to take extra measures to stay warm, and arm warmers were a cozy and cute way. I really like how these turned out, and they are pretty simple to make, too.

This fall decorating couldn’t be easier. You’re pretty much just going to paint everything white. That’s right, it’s like skill level zero. You can do this!
