The Swans of Fifth Avenue

The Swans of Fifth Avenue is a novel by Melanie Benjamin. And it is one that I thoroughly enjoyed reading.

The Story

Finding your true soul mate is difficult for most people. And it can be even more difficult in the 1950's world of New York high society. Babe is the queen of this world. She is beautiful, and she is married to a filthy rich man. But is her life what she really needs it to be? She discovers that it isn't when she strikes up a friendship with Truman Capote. They are soul mates. Even though it is a match than can't be, it's one that makes for the perfect friendship.

What I Think

I really enjoyed reading this book. It is centered around the world of fashion and literature. It's fictionalized, but it does show just how Truman Capote just appeared on the scene. I loved how the book points out that we don't really know what we are missing until it shows up in our lives. And I love that it shows just how valuable a true friend is. The world Babe and Truman live in is one we all think we would like to join, but in reality it may not be. It's a world where just going to a movie is kind of an oddity. And you never share your secrets with others. If you are a person who enjoys literature, or the 1950's society life then this book is one you should check out.
