The Secret Chord

I recently picked up the book The Secret Chord by Geraldine Brooks. I have read another of her novels in the past I can't remember the title right now, but I decided to try out this book.

The Story

This is a work of fiction based on the life of King David in the Bible. The story follows him through his entire life. It begins with his humble beginnings as a shepherd boy, through his years as an outlaw, and his becoming a king. It tells about his many relationships, and accomplishments.

What I Think

I think I expected something a little different from this book. Maybe a retelling of the story I am used to. In some ways the story was familiar. But Brooks has painted David as a manipulative bisexual. And I don't think I liked that. The book points out that even from childhood David was always looking for opportunities to take advantage of. And I didn't really understand why his relationship with Jonathan had to be sexual. It just didn't seem necessary. I think that the real hero of the book is David's son Solomon. I did like that the story was told from the point of view of the prophet Nathan. It was a different way of telling the story. And I liked that.

Overall, this book was okay, but I don't know that I would recommend it to others. It just didn't sit with me as one of the best reads in the world.
