I recently picked up the book Boxers by Gene Luen Yang. So once again you get to hear what I think of this book.

The Book

This book is about the boxer rebellion that took place in China between 1899 and 1901. It's a graphic novel so it is really easy to read. The story focuses in on a young man who has grown up loving Chinese opera. He loves the characters, and he loves the stories. The problem that is occurring in China at the time is there are foreigners taking over the country. And they are not treating the common people well. Little Bao sees what happens to his family members as he is growing up. And he decides to do something about it.

As he fights the power of the opera heroes join him, which makes him and his co fighters super heroes. They actually turn into these characters.

What I Think

I enjoyed reading this book. It was easy to read since it was in a graphic novel form. And the illustrations added to the story. I was able to take a look at what China may have looked like around the turn of the 20th century. Little Bao is a good character he is kind of an underdog at the beginning of the book. And I loved how his love for the opera characters is incorporated into the story. I think it was a great way of adding a super hero feel to events that really did occur in history. If you want an interesting graphic novel to read this one is for you.
