The Stars Are Fire

The Stars Are Fire is a novel by Anita Shreve. She is also the author of the bestselling book The Pilot's Wife.

The Story

Fire comes to a small town in Maine. Grace finds her life turned upside down. She looses her home, she looses her baby, and her husband doesn't return from fighting the fire. She finds that she must figure out a way for her children and mother to survive. Grace goes to her husbands childhood home, with her family. She finds that someone has squatted there. And he is a pianist. He is much different than her husband, and they soon fall in love. But it isn't meant to be at this time.

Grace's husband returns, he was in a coma after being severely burnt during the forest fire. He is angry, and extremely difficult to get along with. Grace decides that she must get her family out of this situation. Where will this decision lead her is the big question though.

What I Think

I did enjoy reading this book. Grace is one of those characters I really felt sorry for. She is trapped in a marriage she really isn't that happy in. And then she feels like she is going to be set free. She begins a life where she is independent, and she is able to survive. And then when her husband returns she must give up all of the new found independence. I can't imagine what that must have felt like. I absolutely disliked her husband. Even in the beginning of the book, and the author meant for that to happen. And I was glad that the author showed that there were good kind men in this world Grace lives in. I was glad that it showed the angry man as the exception and not the rule.

This book is a true romance, so spoiler alert, it does have a happy ending, but Grace has to work to get there.

So if you are a fan of romances, this book will be one that you will enjoy.
