Sunflower Doodles

Flowers have an expression of countenance as much as men or animals. Some seem to smile some have a sad expression some are pensive and diffident others again are plain, honest and upright like the broad-faced sunflower and hollyhock.

The Double Whammy

While I normally try to focus on the good things in life. Today, I'm going to focus on the challenges I've faced this week. This weekend I was hit with the double whammy! Two things happened that are a little bit challenging.

The first situation happened Friday. I arrived at work that morning. I was happy. It was payday Friday! Who isn't happy on payday Friday? I was happy, and then I went to get my paycheck it wasn't there. My boss immediately begins calling all of the offices around town. Nobody has my paycheck. They are hoping it will arrive by Saturday morning. It doesn't arrive. So I ask did they issue me a check? They had to, you register in the system. They call the accounting department, they don't get any information from them. The tax department tells them I am a pending employee. So I guess no check was issued. Well I ask am I supposed to come into work? I get the evil look. And I'm frustrated. Monday comes the boss calls did they find your check? Um, no I don't think they issued one. The boss is currently working on it.

The second situation happened Sunday. I came home from work on Saturday afternoon and Bobaloo wasn't at the door to greet me. This was unusual. I called for her and she came out. But she wasn't herself. I thought she didn't feel well. I thought she will be back to normal in the morning. The problem was she wasn't back to normal. In fact she was worse. Finding a vet's office that is open on a Sunday is not easy, but I did. We ran to the vet. She was examined by the vet. And the news wasn't good. She needed emergency surgery. The cost was $2,000. If she didn't have the surgery the vet recommended that she be put to sleep. And it couldn't wait. And I didn't have $2,000. I had to tell the vet that Bobaloo would need to be put to sleep. So, I left the vet's office with tears and an empty cat carrier.

So this last weekend was not the best weekend I have ever had. And while I know that this is just a spurt and good things will return to my life. I am wondering why does this all happen at once?

Career Decisioins by Captain

My roommate Bobaloo recently made a career decision to become a boxtester. I've started to think that perhaps a feline of my age should make some decisions about professions. I cannot always live this carefree life that I have enjoyed. Even though it is a great life, there may be a time when I will need to support myself in some fashion. So I have begun to explore career options.

It is my understanding that when you begin to explore careers, you should look where you talents are. And then you should look at what your passions consist of.

My Talents

Receiving attention from humans
Being lovable
Not getting stressed over the little things

My Passions

Attention from humans

I have not made decisions on what I am going to do, but I understand that this is the first step in making any career decisions.

Let me know what if any career decisions my fellow felines are exploring so I can see if it is something that I might hold my interest.

Celebrating the Good Things

Sometimes life just gets so crazy and you feel like things aren't going the way you want them to. That's the time to celebrate the good things that are going on in your life.

The Leaves Are Raked

One of my goals for the month of April has been to get all of those oak tree leaves raked. (You can check out the rest of the goals at April Goals.)They just keep shedding leaves. It doesn't matter what time of year it is. Well most of them are raked up. I finally broke down and paid some kids in the neighborhood to finish it up, but hey it's done.

Longer Days

Yes, one of the many things I like about spring is the days get longer. It feels like you have more time during the day. It's great to be able to look out the window at 6:00 pm and still see the sun.

For a Job

I am thankful that I am employed. There are so many people who are seeking employment. I just hope my employer can find my paycheck which they lost before the day is over.

I love chocolate. And I'm thankful for all the different varieties of chocolate there are. I really enjoyed the Chocolove's Chilie's and Cherries In Dark Chocolate candy bar I had this week. It was so tasty!

What are you celebrating this week?

Are Food Preservative Preserving Your Fat?

Have you ever read the label on a canned good? It's kind of scary isn't it? All those words you can't pronounce. I recently had a conversation with a friend who moved out to the country. She spent last summer gardening, canning and all of the hard work that goes a long with living the quiet life. She stated that she lost the weight she normally does in the summer, but she didn't gain any winter weight. My reply to her was you are eating food that you canned there are fewer preservatives. The preservatives can cause you to gain weight. So are food preservatives preserving your fat?

Well, I'm not a scientist, but I believe they are. But with the reading I've done it seems as though this is true.

Did you know?

The antibiotics in dairy products may be killing off good bacteria in your digestive tract. Is this proven, well I don't have specifics, but it makes sense.

Studies have shown that high fructose corn syrup have caused weight gain in rats. They gained weight when rats who were provided with table sugar and had the same calorie intake for the day didn't. That's scary isn't it?

Hydrogenated fats are used in cookies, chips and crackers. They make the shelf life of foods longer. They are more commonly referred to as trans fats. Keep in mind trans fats do occur in some foods naturally. It's the ones that are used as preservatives that are dangerous.

After learning just a few things, I've decided maybe I should read those food labels a little more closely. And well maybe I need to reach for some foods that are a little more healthy when I'm at the store.

Zombie Apocalypse Chef Salad

So the zombie's have taken over the world, and you are tired of eating canned goods. You want some fresh food. But how do you get it? It's not like you have time to grow a garden with all that running from the zombies. That's where a recipe for a zombie apocalypse chef salad comes in handy.

What You'll Need

Dandelion Greens all you have to do is go pick them
Hard Boiled Eggs any kind of eggs will do by now you should be used to scavenging for them
Onions they do grow wild so you such be able to find some somewhere
Tomatoes you should be able to use some sun dried tomatoes. And if you are lucky you might find some volunteer tomato plants somewhere.
Poultry of some kind preferably turkey by now you should know how to hunt or trap a bird. But turkey jerky could work in a worst case scenario.
Cheese this could be the tough one, but Velveeta cheese does have a long shelf life.
Bacon Bits Bacos or a package of bacon bits will do.
Salad Dressing of your choice this should be plentiful at the stores as you rummage for food since people probably won't be using that much of it.
Now, place all of these items in a bowl and you have a fine salad.
Did you know that every part of a dandelion is edible? And dandelion greens are a good source of calcium. Who would have thought?

Chocolove Chilies & Cherries In Dark Chocolate Review

So I was at the grocery store the other day. And this Chilies & Cherries in Dark Chocolate bar jumped into my shopping cart. I guess it wasn't until I saw the movie Chocolate that I realized that there were many other ingredients that could be added to chocolate bars. And I dark chocolate is something I learned to love later in life.

So I decided it was time for me to try chilies in my chocolate. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised. This chocolate bar is made by Chocolove. The package states that it contains Ancho and Chipolte chili peppers for heat. It states that the cherries are the sweet. I found that the chocolate has that slight bitter taste of dark chocolate, but then the cherries jump out, and then there is a little bit of heat. It was a pleasant combination.

The packaging is great. It's wrapped in a red paper and then again in gold foil. I also like that this Chocolove is an American company based out of Boulder, CO. I also like that the company is involved in supporting the cocoa community globally.

If you're looking for a good tasting chocolate bar with a slight twist on the norm, this one is for you.

No, That's a Wall

"Is that it?"
"No, that's a wall."
"It could be disguised."
"You're not very good at looking for things, are you?"
"I'm good at looking for walls. Look, I found another one."

Zombies Need Love Too

Zombies Need Love Too is a compilation of comics by Mark Tatulli. Lio is a little bit like Dennis the Menace with a dark side. This book has been out for a couple of years, but it's one that will lighten your day especially if you have a love of things just a little weird. And for all of us who have had a little trouble fitting in to the norm this comic series is perfect.
Since it's a comic strip series, it focuses in more on the artwork to express what is trying to be said instead of words. Words are few and far between in the strips. And Tatulli makes his point. So if you are looking for a book that won't take long to read through this book is for you. The only thing I didn't like about this book was it was too short. Go ahead and check it out! And let me know what you've been reading.
Are you trying to figure out how to survive the zombie apocalypse? Then read this post.

These Are a Few of My Favorite Things

I am Bobaloo, and these are a few of my favorite things in life.

1. Wreaking Havoc

I love to create trouble. When my roommate walks past me, I just can't resist the temptation of biting his butt. Anyway that I can stir up trouble I love it!

2. Boxes

If there is a box in the room, I must see what is inside. I am a professional boxtester. You can read more about my professional adventures through the post I wrote on this.

3. Catnip

Yes, catnip is a gift from God, and I love it. I love lying around after a taste of catnip dreaming about all of the birds that I will catch.

4. Sneaking Out the Back  Door

While I am not able to do this too often, I love sneaking out the back door. The chase begins and I love it! It is most important to make your pet human do something extremely silly when they are chasing you around the yard. My pet human believes that I am an indoor cat, but in reality I do whatever I please.

5. Birds

I love to watch birds through the window. In fact, I can not be disturbed if I am watching the birds. My pet human believes that she can distract me with attention while I am watching birds. What she doesn't realize is that I am actually studying the flying creatures so that the next time I sneak out I can catch one.

Now that you know a few of my favorite things, fellow felines what are your favorite things?

So It's Another Case of What Were You Thinking?

Whenever I read the news I always think to myself what were you thinking? And today it was no different when I read about a local man who was arrested. Now many of you are thinking locals are arrested daily. The thing that is different about this man is he was in possession of 6,000 child porn files on his computer.

Now you can call me judgmental, but I think that's a lot of child porn. But then again I think that one child porn file on a computer would be a lot. I believe based on the responses that were posted on the story page that like most people were pretty much disgusted by this individual owning that much child porn.

But there was one response that really troubled me. One individual stated that the individual who was arrested was not as bad as a child molester. In reality there is truth to that statement. But part of me wonders is that really true? Would child porn exist if there weren't individuals who consume it? I do believe like everything on the planet if there was no demand for a product there would be fewer people meeting that demand. So is the individual who is looking at these images as large a problem as the individual who molests a child? Honestly I'm not absolutely sure.

The other thing that concerned me was that individuals were simply ready to allow inmates in prison to kill this individual. My initial response to those individuals was wow, he hasn't been convicted yet. And then I was like well I don't want him in my neighborhood. And I did think that this man certainly has mental health issues. So what do society do with an individual who are clearly aren't able to control their impulses that could have extremely negative consequences?

Brussels Sprout Salad

Now, I know there are some of you that are saying Brussels sprouts and salad? How can this be? But Brussels sprouts are part of the cabbage family, and their peak season is the cool weather months. Celebrating the Good Things

Life is full of big moments and then it is full of small moments. It's time to celebrate the good things in life once again.

The first thing to celebrate is warmer weather. Every spring I am amazed at how much less time it takes me to get ready in the morning. The reason is I don't have to run outside and start the car to warm it up before I go anywhere. I don't have to take all the extra time to put on a coat, boots, mittens, and a hat before I go out. It's like extra free time.

The second thing kind of goes along with the first. With spring comes the time to put away all of those sweaters and sweatshirts. I kind of get a new wardrobe. And of course I am able to figure out whether or not I need to go shopping for new clothes. Once again I need to start looking for a new pair of shoes to wear to work. Why am I so hard on my shoes at work?

Next up is yard work. Yes, it is one of those things that I put off doing. But I find that when I am out doing the yard work I actually kind of enjoy it. I really enjoy when feeling the sun shine down on me. And in some ways I enjoy going out when it's a little rainy. And I'm amazed at how one little acorn was able to take hold years and years ago always produces so much work for me in my yard. Do oak trees ever stop shedding leaves?

Lastly, I am celebrating that I had one of those days when I felt like going with the flow. You know when you go into work and someone isn't there. There are days when it would just make me crazy upset. But today I was able to just say okay, and do what I needed to do in order to get the work completed.

What things are you celebrating today?

Birds of Chicago Band

There are just some bands that you can't pigeon hole. Birds of Chicago is one of those bands. Their music sounds a little bit country, a little bit folksy, a little bit bluesy, and a little bit soulful.

The first song I heard by this band was I Have Heard Words. So what did I like about this song? I like the melody. It's a little sad, but pretty. I like the lyrics, they go well with the melody. I like the voices of the performers. But what I really like is that they added a clarinet to the song. It's not what you normally hear in a song. And it added a little something special to the song.

JT Nero and Allison Russell are the voices of Birds of Chicago. And when I listened to the song Flying Dreams I thought what a cool thing to wish for someone. It's a little more than wish someone sweet dreams. It's wishing that someone will have everything that dreams offer.

So now that you've heard a couple of their songs, tell me what you think of their music.

My Worst Enemy Is

My worst enemy is my habit of procrastination. I'm trying to conquer my enemy this year. I stated that my word for the year was completion. But because procrastination is my enemy it is a battle.

The problem with procrastination is that it is a thief. It steals my time because I end up sitting around thinking about all of the things that I want to get finished. It steals your dreams because you don't make them happen. Once again you sit around dreaming. And then of course you spend time thinking about how you shouldn't be procrastinating so much so more time is stolen. Sometimes it feels like an endless cycle.

My question is how do I beat my enemy? I simply have to get off my butt and do something then I will have conquered my worst enemy. So it's time to end this post so I can get some other important things completed for the day!

Just After Sunset Book Review

One of my April Goals is to spend 1/2 an hour a day reading. After I've been reading. I just finished reading Just After Sunset by Stephen King. The book was released several years ago, but I didn't have a chance to read it then. This was the time to read the book.

The book is a collection of short stories by Stephen King. The stories cover everything from hitchhikers to psychiatrists treating a patient with OCD. And they have that usual horror twist that all of his writing has.

I enjoyed reading all of the stories, but my favorite was The Things Left Behind. It's the story of a man who called in sick on a whim on September 11th. And he worked at the Twin Towers. His co-workers didn't make it through the day. And he experiences survivors guilt. But something strange has happened. The little items that belonged to his co-workers appear at his home. You know the items that are just silly, but someone keeps at their desk. He tries to get rid of the items, but he just can't. It seems as though each of them have a story to tell about the individual they belonged to. And of course he feels like he is going a little crazy. But as the story closes he realizes that the way to get rid of the items is to let their stories guide the items back to individuals who were important to his co-worker.

I think this story really appealed to me because it reminded me that the events of September 11th weren't really what I saw happen on television. It reminded me that each person who was in that building had a story. There was something unique about each person.

I do have to admit that the last story in the book really grossed me out. It was an interesting story about revenge, but it was gross, and if there were any of the stories that I would like to forget it is that one. But of course it's the grossest story that always sticks with you isn't it?

So have any of you read any good books recently? Let me know if there is a book that you recommend.

Never Ever Hurry

This is Captain writing here.

And I need to let all of you felines out there. Never every hurry to do anything your pet human requests of you. Humans often believe that we should come immediately when we request it. They will repeat our name over and over when they want us to come near them. This is a sad attempt on their part to control us. But it is important to remember that we are not canines we are felines! And while canines will do anything a human wants. We felines know that we truly control all situations.

When your pet human call your name. Felines you should slowly turn toward them. Then slowly walk toward your human. It is very important to make your pet wait just a little. You must not let them know that you truly do want to come to them. That it has pleased you that they have called your name. When you arrive stop just out of their reach so they must come to you instead of you to them. Then you should allow them to pet you. But act very bored at first. Then after a couple of minutes begin to purr.

There are only two occasions when a feline should hurry when their pet human calls them. The first is if your pet is offering you a treat. And the second of course is for that glorious thing all felines crave Catnip!

Fresh Signs of Spring

The signs of spring are all around us. Flowers are popping out. Snow has melted. The days are longer. And one of the fresh signs of spring in my neck of the woods is the community garden scarecrow.

How I Love Those Who Say What They Think

Voltaire once said, How I love those who say what they think, those that only half think are only half alive.

But is saying what you think always wise? We all know those people who say exactly what they think. And well they don't care about how what they say makes others feel. It is important to be honest with other people, but is there a way to do it without being thoughtless? We all know there is.

But how do you deal with the person who says whatever pops into their heads?

1. Remember they are just being themselves. Some people are just blunt. And you can't change that. It's their personality. Diversity after all is the spice of life.

2. Be tactful with your responses. The old saying two wrongs don't make a right is absolutely true. While you may not have control over what the other individual says, you do have control over what you say. Just because the way they phrase something may be hurtful doesn't mean that you have to be hurtful too.

3. Let it roll off your back. If you can't change it. Let it go! Most of these people don't mean to be hurtful. Don't realize what they are doing. So since you can't change it let it go!

April Goals

It's so had for me to believe that a new month is here. And it's time for me to look at the goals I set for the month of March. I am sad to say that I didn't do to well with my March goals. During the past month I have battled with a cold. Had a vacation that was not very relaxing. And it seems as though the month flew by.

My first goal for March was to make some seed bombs. Well I bought the items to make the bombs, but I have not made them yet.

The belly dancing well I thought the dvd I have was an instructional video, but it wasn't. So I did try it, but I think I would benefit more from a video that shows me the basic steps. If anyone knows of a good one please let me know.

Cleaning the oven, well it's cleaner than it was at the start of the month. It's not perfect, but much better.

Editing blog posts, I actually edited five blog posts. So I did accomplish one of my goals for the month.

That leaves me with a 25% success rate. I'm not real happy with that, but hey it is better than a 0% success rate.

So what do I want to accomplish in April?

Clean the Backyard

You always pay for it if you don't rake all of your leaves in the fall. Well, I didn't get my raking finished in the fall, and I have an oak tree. For those of you with oak trees in your yard you know that the very last leaf doesn't fall of that tree until the new ones begin coming out. And oh my do they have loads of leaves. So I have a lot of yard clean up to do.

File My Taxes

This is a given. I have to do so I know I will accomplish this goal. Yay!

Spend a Half Hour a Day Reading

I have stacks of books around the house, and a fantastic library in town. And my lunch break has been extended at work. So I should be able to use some of that time doing something I really enjoy. I want to spend half an hour a day reading. If I spend half of my lunch break reading and the other half to eat, I'll be totally relaxed when I return to work.

Clean the Bathroom Closet

When I completed Operation Clean Medicine Cabinet, I opened the bathroom closet. It needs cleaned out and reorganized badly. If I can keep the cats out of it while I'm cleaning it, I'm sure it will look much better fairly quickly.
So what do you want to accomplish for the month of April?
