The Ethical Coach Leader

Doping scandals are constantly rocking the sports world. Recently, Maria Sharapova was found with melodonium in her bloodstream. A drug that was recently banned that increases performance. How should the sports world deal with the problem of drugging? Nobody seems to know the answer. But I recently read the book The Ethical Coach Leader by Dwight Johnson that addresses the issue of ethics in the sports world.

The Story

In this book the author has used his creativity to lay out a plan to address the issue of ethics in the sports world. He has used a parable to tell the story of a young man who has tested positive for performance enhancing drugs in his system. This is the coach's worst nightmare. The star of his team is guilty. How does he deal with it?

Like the character in A Christmas Carol, the coach is visited by ghosts who guide him through this experience. Each ghost points out a part of the possible solution. And the coach finds himself implementing a plan that will change his team and the way that he coaches. It also finds the coach taking a hard look at the way he lives.

What I Think Of The Book

When I received this book I was unsure if I wanted to read it. I thought to myself, this is going to be another book that somehow manages to justify the bad behavior of athletes. As I read the book, I was pleased to find that this book isn't about that. This book is about using the creativity of the coaches and athletes to solve serious ethical issues in the sports world. And the author points out that if these issues aren't addressed they do have implications for the rest of society.

And he points out that his plan does not just address the sports world. This is a plan that addresses issues in throughout our culture. I like that he points out that leaders must lead by example. They have to be willing to examine their own lives on a regular basis. Leaders have to be willing to make good choices in their life.

He also points out that when individuals make an error in their lives the punishment needs to fit the individual and the error. That's a lesson that our criminal justice system really needs to take a look at I think.

The one thing I didn't like about this book was minor or maybe not minor. I can't decide. When the young man who is caught drugging himself in the book, he is asked who provided him with the drugs. He refuses to provide the name of the person who provided it to him. But nothing happens when he refuses to give up that name. At least I couldn't see any part of the consequences that revolved around it. I wondered if we are encouraging a culture of silence. I don't know how that problem would be addressed. But I do believe it is a problem.

 Who Should Read This Book

Well the first group of individuals who could benefit from this book is coaches. This book does show a way to solve some of the issues that are big issues in the sports world right now.

The next group of individuals who should read this book is leaders. It doesn't matter if you are leading a company or just a Sunday School class this is a book that could be beneficial. It lays out a plan that encourages leaders to develop individuals who believe that doing the right things is how things should be in life. It lays out a plan that show individuals how to teach others to lead an ethical life.

And then individuals who are interested in becoming better individuals in life will probably enjoy this book. While it is primarily a book for leaders, the author points out that it is individuals who create an ethical world. And for me that is what is really important.

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by this book, and I recommend it to individuals who are looking to solve problems in an organization.

How I Became an Eisenfunk Fan

It all started one Sunday night when I just didn't want to go to bed. I didn't want my day off to end. I can think of anything to do when I need to either be cleaning or my day off is coming to an end. So that night I began watching videos.

For some reason Schoolhouse Rock was my choice that night. I needed a reminder about The Preamble. Why I needed to know this I don't know, but I did need it that night.

The sidebar began to suggest Animaniacs videos. So I thought a little geography lesson might be a good to brush up on. That tune is so catchy, and it always makes me want to travel.

And that made me think of Bento Boxes. Minions Bento Boxes if you want to be specific. So I watched how to make one. Don't be surprised if you see a post on something like this.

Since I kind of had this cartoon theme going, I went with it. Goth cartoons were what I needed. That would be fun. But I wanted something different than I usually watch. Do a search and you will find When Genevieve Ruled The World. It's an interesting and a little dark tale about what happens when a three year old ruled the world. The thought is a little scary isn't it!

And the viewing recommendations led me on a wild journey where I found a band called Eisenfunk. I found the song Pong by Eisenfunk. Does this sound have great lyrics. Um, well if you consider Let us play pong repeated over and over great, then yes it does. But I love how it brings that ancient video game Pong back and it reminded me of the hours I spent playing the game. Oh, yeah, and I love that industrial feel it has too!

So now you know what an evening just cruising around youtube can bring into your life. It's always an adventure.

Monday's Motivators

Monday's are challenging  days for me. I have to return to work after a day off. But there are things that motivate me. I think about all the great things that have happened throughout the week, and I remind myself that this week is going to present some really great moments.

Working in the Yard

Yes, I love my garden, but as I have stated before it has taken a beating over the past few years. There are bushes that have grown in there that don't belong there. There are mini trees that I just don't want there. And of course there are all of those leaves that I always complain about. If you read my post Daffodil Days, you can see some of the spring flowers. Yes, soon there will be flowers everywhere. But this week I spent time gathering up more leaves. I'm telling you it is never ending with those things. I dug up a couple of the bushes that have gone crazy, and that were never meant to be there. And of course putting out some wildflower seeds. It just felt good to get see some progress, and know that I have gotten some things out of there that didn't belong.

Last week I was on vacation. I spent a lot of time running around doing loads of things, And I ate out a lot. But this week I got to spend some time cooking at home. I love to good. There is nothing better than a good home made meal. And of course cooking is an art that gives you a big payout. You get to eat what you made. The Italian Sausage Stuffed Red Peppers I made were wonderful.

Marvelous Finds

My friend Laura and I went thrift shopping last week. It was half off day. You know we had to go. It was fun going through all of the items I purchased. I got some pretty good stuff for a lot less than I would have paid for it through the regular stores. And I don't feel guilty about buying items made in China that way.

Whenever I finish watching a series on Netflix, there always seems to be another great show or movie that I find to watch. It doesn't even matter what type of mood I'm in. I absolutely loved Soaked In Bleach. It's all about Kurt Cobain. The anniversary of his death is coming up soon. It was a sad day for the music world.

Stormfall Age of Wars

There is a way to waste loads of time each day. And I always seem to find that way. My current time waster is this game. But it's so much fun. If any of you like playing online games drop me a line, and I'll send you an invite. It's loads of fun building your castle and army.

Confetti Eggs

Are these the funnest thing ever invented or what? And the look on my friend Ian's face when I smashed one on his head was priceless. He wasn't expecting that.

What has made your Easter week special?

Daffodil Days

You know that spring has arrived when you see these popping up in your yard. For most of us it is a sight for sore eyes. Finally a break in the cold weather. And we all can't wait to see them bloom.
Yes, another we have survived another winter. And the daffodils in my yard have arrived. I love the bright colors. But there are a few things that you should know about daffodils.

These bright and beautiful flowers that are one of the first signs of spring are not from the Americas. They are originally from Europe and Asia. If you really think about it they are kind of an invasive species that wouldn't be allowed into the country anymore.

Daffodils grow from a bulb and they should be planted in the fall. So if you love these flowers, and you didn't plan for your spring garden. You'll need to go to the gardening department to get some to plant in your yard.

They are fairly hardy. I mean they are some of the first flowers to bloom each year.

In nature daffodils grow in clumps. So when you plant them in your garden, plant them close together. They really do seem to like this. There are often a few that venture a little further out, but most stay with the clump.

There are several different varieties of these beautiful bloomers. If you choose a variety of the different plants, you could have daffodils for a solid six to eight weeks. That's a lot of color in your garden for a long period of time. And there are many different shades from yellow to pink that are available.

Here are some tips for achieving a great daffodil garden.

1. Choose early, mid, and late bloomers to extend the life of the garden.
2. Choose a spot that receives at leasts a half day of sunlight.
3. Plant bulbs eight inches eep for consistent performance.
4. Fertilize when you plant with a slow release fertilizer formulated for bulbs.
5 In spring, let the foliage remain for at least 12 weeks after flowering to replenish the bulb.

Easter Trivia

It's Easter and I thought it might be fun to run through a little bit of trivia about Easter.

Easter is a Christian holiday, but like many other religious holidays, some of the things associated with the holiday have been borrowed from other belief systems. The Easter Bunny and Easter Eggs were adapted to the Christian holiday. The hare and the egg are symbols of the Anglo-Saxon goddess Eastre.

There are 90 million chocolate Easter Bunnies produced each year. That's a lot of bunnies.

Some people claim that pretzels were originally associated with Easter. They symbolized the crossed arms of Jesus.

Legends state that the robin's red breast comes from a robin attempting to help Jesus remove his crown of thorns. As the robin moved one of thorns in the crown to ease Jesus' pain a drop of his blood splattered on the robin. The robin has had a red breast since then. There's a great book about the legend called The Legend of the Easter Robin

Coloring eggs for Easter has been around for a long time. It dates back at least to the Medieval times where English Kings gave out hundreds of decorated eggs to the household. These eggs were pretty special. They had gold leafed decorations. Wouldn't you like that from the Easter Bunny?

Gardening Tips By Mister Picky Pants

Gardening season has begun, and I am quite happy. This has provided me with the opportunity to spend quality time with my pet human. She really does enjoy gardening. And I have found that I enjoy it too. So I have a few gardening tips for the feline readers.

Stay Under Foot

It is always good to stay close to your human while they are gardening. You will find that they do a lot of bending and stooping so there are many opportunities for petting.

Roll Around On The Ground

You will find that humans make many piles of dirt and and leaves while they are working in the garden. You can bond quite well with your pet human by simply rolling around in the pile of dirt they have just dug up.

While your human is working at pulling weeds feel free to nibble on some grass. You are more than likely to get a loving glance thrown your way.

We all know that gardens do take some love and care. Make sure that you help your pet out by digging up a spot of your own and fertilizing the seeds that were just planted. This will surely provide you with some loving words.

Please fellow felines let me know if you have taken up gardening as a hobby this year?

Dream Easter Basket List

Easter is Sunday, and there are loads of things I would love to have my Easter Basket this year. Here are my top favorites for the year.
An if you read my post You Saw That Didn't You you already know that I have been binge watching episodes of Sailor Moon. So it would be pretty great if the Easter Bunny included the first six volumes in my basket this year.

My friends and I have been looking for a new card game to play together. The goal is to win the game by poisoning other players. I found it on Kickstarter, but I'm not sure if it is actually available yet.
So anybody who knows me knows I love little cute things, and I really love bento boxes.

What is an Easter Basket without chocolate, an I really love those Lindt truffles. They are just so yummy!

I always want new hairclips, and I love the design on this one. Oh, Easter Bunny I will love you to death if this is in my basket this year.

What do the rest of you want inclued in your Easter Basket?

Italian Sausage Stuffed Red Peppers

Here's What You Do

Cut out the top of your peppers and deseed them. Set them aside. Saute your garlic in the olive oil. Next add your sausage to cook. Then add your tomatoes an parsley. Cook them for about 15 minutes. Add in your orzo an your cheese and mix all of it well. Now take the mixture and stuff your peppers. Bake  your peppers for 20 to 30 minutes. Add then sprinkle them with a little of the cheese.

The Copy Machine Complication

Have you had one of those days when you wake up and convince yourself yeah, I'm going to work today and it's going to be a great day? And then you get to work and it doesn't go as planned. It's not really starting out as that great a day.

That was my work day yesterday. I got to work, and the office wasn't opened on time. That throws the whole day off. Our office works on the premise from the moment we open up that day we are working toward closing it down on time that day. The schedule was off from the very beginning of the day. You think to yourself. There's no problem we can get caught up. It's just going to throw us off a little.

Then the copy machine doesn't work right. It crumpled up the papers that were being copied. This wasn't going to work. We tried everything to get it to work, but no luck. The customers are starting to get a little edgy because they have to wait. And one of them commits the big customer no no. They state why can't you get that working. I immediately thought, oh, no you did not just say that!

This is kind of an informational moment (or two) in this post. For those of you who ever deal with civil servants keep this statement in mind. Do not ever take out your frustration on a civil servant because equipment isn't working. I repeat the ever part. You will have created the perfect storm. We are often working with equipment that is antiquated and limping along. When you take your frustration out on a civil servant you might have a person who is less likely to tell you the shortcuts. In fact they might just have the greatest defense weapon in the civil servants arsenal. That weapon is the FINE PRINT.

For those of you who don't know the fine print is that rule that any civil servant knows. It is usually something everyone tries to work around. But there are two times when the fine print will definitely be brought up. The first is when management tells us we have to follow that rule. And the second is when an individual is giving a civil servant a hard time. You will see that the fine print is going to be pointed out to you.

So back to the work day, I immediately pointed out that the form he completed clearly stated that he was supposed to bring his own copies of the information that was required. I was not supposed to make copies of it for him. That pretty much shut him up!

Now, was there a copy machine in the building that I could use. I work in a large building. You would think that this would be easy to determine. Oh, no, it took an act of congress to get me into another section of the building with a copy machine that would make copies that were acceptable for the purpose of the forms I was reviewing.

So, there was a good part of this. I would get my exercise by walking to the other side of the building. Can you believe it that copy machine jammed too? Hmmm, things really weren't going as planned.

That machine was a little easier to fix and I was back in business. Thankfully, the copy machine repair man came and was able to get the antiquated machine to work.

I guess the point of this post is some days do present complications, but that doesn't mean that it will be a horrible day. It's just the moment that is not going the way we want it to. And sometimes we just have to go with the flow and try to get through those tough moments. I mean those moments are what make each of us better people.

You Saw That Didn't You

I was watching Sailor Moon the other day. And there was this scene where Sailor Moon and her friend see a bus disappear into a black void. They both immediately said "You saw that didn't you?"

When I heard this, I was reminded of the time I was sitting with a friend down in the Keys. We were waiting outside the grocery store for a cab to pick us up. We were sitting on the curb talking. As my friend was talking to me I saw a car, and things just didn't seem right. The inside of that car seemed a little hazy. More like it was smoky. I knew there was something wrong here.

I asked my friend is that car on fire? His reply no it's just the way the sunlight is hitting the car windows that makes it look smoky. It didn't sound right, but I went along with it. I sat and watched the car a little longer while my friend continued talking. I saw just a little bit of orange in the car. I interrupted my friend, and said I really think that car might be on fire. He looked over and yelled that car is on fire!

That incident has always stuck with me. The problem I had that day was I didn't trust myself. I knew that there was a serious problem with that car, but I didn't believe that I was right. So I had to ask someone else to confirm what I already knew.

Sometimes it's nice to have someone else tell you they saw what you saw. But there are times when that can lead to trouble. And sometimes it can even make you unhappy!

Sometimes when you know your right. You might just be better off to trust your instincts and go with what you know is right. Sometimes you just might not want to ask you saw that didn't you?

Collecting Moments

This past week I've been on vacation. And well like all other vacations I've had time to relax and do a lot of things I want to do instead of what I have to do. You know that thing called my job.
So I've spent the week collecting moments and not things. Well for the most part not things. I'll get to that later.

So here are a few of the moments I collected this week.

One of the greatest feelings on earth is sleeping when you are supposed to be at work. It just feels like you got away with something. I usually at to be at work at 6:45 am on Saturday mornings, but the past two Saturdays I have slept past that time. It felt wonderful.

Spending time coloring a picture. And not having to stop until it was finished. I received a picture in the Love and Blessed Subscription Box I reviewed. It was so much fun to see which colors I wanted to use and blend all of them into a masterpiece.

St. Patrick's Day! Do I really need to add anything about this one?

Running into a friend I haven't seen in a while during that power shopping spree at the Goodwill. There's a reason I never go to thrift stores. And half off days are just dangerous. But it was great to see my friend Sarah and her husband Jon. We don't see each other that often since that moved to the middle of nowhere.

An entire day of really not getting much done around the house without any interruptions. I didn't get things that I want accomplished, but I did enjoy the peace and quiet.

And finally, that granddaddy moment of them all when I realized that my old car didn't really need a jump to get started all I really needed to do was to push the clutch in to start it. As my friend Gloria put it you really are a blonde!

What's moments have you collected this week?

Tips For Garden Rookies

Spring is finally here officially. And those of us who enjoy gardening have really started to think a little more about what we are going to do with our gardens this year. If you read my post Spring Yard Cleanup, you know that I have a lot of work to do in my yard. I have been picking up leaves for ages. And there are loads of tree limbs underneath all of those leaves. How did that happen? But I realized that there is always room for those beginning gardeners. So here are some of my tips for garden rookies.

Start each year with fresh seeds. And make sure you read the packages carefully. Some be sown directly in the garden which is the easiest way. (We all love these seeds.) But it helps to give others, such as broccoli and cabbage, a headstart by growing transplants indoors.

It helps to have a tray called a flat. But there are those of us who are a little bit more financially savvy. You can use paper cups or even tin cans. Just make sure you poke some holes in the bottom of the container so excess water can drain away.

Make sure you label those seed containers with the name of the seed and the date it was planted. Some seeds take a little longer to grow. And your seed packet should give you a little information on how long you have to wait.

First Leaves

When the seedlings start to grow, the first leaves (called seed leaves) are oval or round. The next set of leaves (called true leaves) look more like the big leaves will. When these appear, remove the cover, and place the flat in bright light. Water ever other week.

If you planned ahead, the roots will have filled the container about the time that the weather is right for planting outdoors.

The Great Garbage Caper

I hate to admit it, but I had a garbage mishap the other day. Anyone who has spent much time with me knows that my favorite thing in the world other than catnip is tuna. I can't get enough of it. I will do pretty much anything for it.

That willingness to actively seek out tuna is exactly what got me into trouble this week. You see my pet human decided it would be good to open a pouch of tuna. I immediately ran to the kitchen. I must be present when there is tuna involved.

My good and faithful pet human does know that she must provide me with some of the tuna when the packet is open. That day she was a little stingy. They were just small bites. Not nearly enough for a fellow like me. I announced this to her, but she didn't listen. In fact she told me I had enough. Fellow felines imagine an announcement like this. Imagine a cat getting enough tuna. It is laughable!

So my human took her meal to the other room. This was my opportunity. I smelled the delightful aroma of fish in the garbage bag. And I thought I would teach the human a lesson. I would take a play from the canine world. I would dig the packet out of the trash. I made my decision, and delved into the bag.

It was a small bag that my human brings home from the grocery store. No problem for me though, I could manage it. I put my head in the bag, and I found that beloved packet. I started to pull it out. But it did not go as smoothly as I planned. I found that there was something around my head. I tried to get free. I moved through the kitchen. This bag would not set me free. I admit I panicked I ran through the house to find my pet.

The human saw me and she laughed. My pride was injured. I am not meant to be an object of ridicule. How would I survive this bag attached to my body and laughter all in one day?

Finally, the human took pity on me, and she removed the bag. I received a lecture as she picked up all the trash that I spread throughout the house. I don't believe I deserved this personally, so I did what all felines do when humans try to tell us how to behave. I walked away and ignored her.

I do hope that this human has learned her lesson though. I know that she now understands just how important tuna is to me.

Buffalo Chicken and Rice Salad

Everybody loves the great taste of buffalo chicken wings. But they often aren't that healthy. Here's a way that you can get that wonderful taste minus some of that health guilt that can come along with eating it.

Here's What You Need

1 cup cooked brown rice
1 cup chopped celery
2 Tablespoons Olive Oil
1 lb cubed chicken
1/2 cup red hot sauce
1/4 cup water
1 cup salad greens
1/2 cup crumbled blue cheese

Here's What You Do

Warm 1 Tablespoon olive oil in a skillet. Next cook your celery for a couple of minutes in the olive oil. Set that aside. Add the remaining olive oil and the chicken. Brown the chicken and then add the hot sauce and water. Continue cooking until the chicken is cooked thoroughly. Now mix the rice chicken and celery together. Place it on top of the salad greens and sprinkle it with the blue cheese. It's a great and healthy salad.

We all have dreams  in life. But so few of us actually make them come true. We sit and try to figure out why they never come true. I recently received a copy of the book Dream by Marcia Wieder to review. There are some books you read and you think that they are good. There are books that you read that you never want to end. And there are some books that you tell yourself I have to read this again. Dream is a book that I told myself you have to read this again.

The Book

The author is the creator of Dream University. And her goal in life is to help other achieve their dreams. I know everyone out there just screamed alright that's just what I need someone to make all of my dreams come true. But as the author points out in this book you are the only one who can make your dreams come true.

Marcia provides an instruction manual on how to make dreams come to true. She provides exercises that help an individual find what is causing them not to dream. This book isn't a quick fix book. The exercises involve some work. But it you sit down and actually figure out exactly what you want you will begin to move toward the things you really dream about.

What I Learned

I learned quite a bit from this book. I learned that I really do need to sit down and focus in on what my true dream in life is. It's more easy than you think. Then I learned that I need to sit down a set some small dreams that I can and will achieve. I learned or maybe I was just reminded that I really need to set time aside to work on making my dream come true each day. I also learned that if it is really important to me, I will start doing it. I will begin to look for the things that I fear and conquer those fears. In short, I have a lot of work to do.

Who Should Read This Book

If  you are interested in living the life you have dreamed is possible, then you should definitely read this book. If you are interested in conquering your fears that hold you back, then you should read this book. If you can't afford a dream coach, you should read this book. In essence anybody who wants more out of life than the day to day routine of just living should read this book.

The Glimmer Girls

Natalie Grant has developed a series of books for young girls. The series is called The Glimmer Girls. And I was fortunate to receive the first two books in the series from the author in exchange for an honest review.

The Glimmer Girls

The Story

The story begins with the Glimmer family going to London. The story revolves around Mia, Maddie and Lulu. Their mother is a performer named Gloria Glitter so the children travel with their mother. The girls spend their days exploring the city with their nanny. Their exploring takes them to the art museums of London. And the girls notice that something is wrong during their visit. Maddie sees someone steal a painting. But she can't get anyone to believe her. The story moves through the girls solving the mystery of who stole the painting.

The Story

In this book the Glimmer Girls go with their mother to San Diego. And there Mia finds that someone is setting the animals at Watery World are being set free from their habitats. It sounds great, but the problem is the animals at the park really need the help of the keepers. Mia loves the dolphins and believes she needs to help. But once again the girls find that it is more difficult to help than they thought.

What I Think

I really liked these books. The girls were full of life, and really did seek out adventure. They each have their distinct personality. And their parents understand that each child has their own unique talents that will develop with time. These girls are all smart, and they are not afraid o explore the world around them. The books also teach readers about the different places the girls visit. And I like that the girls are problem solvers. The girls also go after what they want. And they learn lessons from the mistakes they make.

The one thing I didn't like about these books is that the Glimmer Girls live in a world that most girls don't. They are able to travel, and visit places that many children don't normally get to visit. They attend concerts and they live a glamorized life. That's not really realistic, but hey everybody needs something to dream about don't they?

Who Should Read This Book

This book is great for those tween girls. It has strong young girls as the main characters. It touches on many of the problems that girls face. They face problems of how to get people to listen to them. They are trying to figure out what they are good at. And of course those sibling relationships. Parents of tween girls might find this series interesting too. It does show how to support this age group in a positive way. And of course fans of young adult literature may find these books interesting too.

Another great book for children

Love and Blessed Subscription Box

Subscription boxes are all the rage. There is a subscription box for pretty much everything anymore. I've read reviews. And I've talked to others about the subscription boxes they receive. But until now I've never had the opportunity to review a subscription box. But I received a free box from Love and Blessed in exchange for an honest review.

Like most subscription boxes it is sent out monthly. But it is a little different than some. The box is not about what you can buy, but more about what you receive. Each month has a different theme. The the for the box I received was the Masterpiece Box.

The box came with a mini poster, a sticker, and a card with a verse on it. The gift that came along with the box was a set of pencils, mini poster and a frame for the poster.

I really liked the sticker in the box, it stated One Of a Kind. It was a great reminder that I am a unique individual. But along with the verse and the poster it reminded me to celebrate that I am unique.

I really liked the mini poster with the floral design. If you have read posts in the past, you know that I do like to color. And the floral design was active enough that it was really fun to color. But it did take time to complete.

I really enjoyed this box. It did provide me with encouragement to be the unique person I am. And it reinforced the idea that I am a masterpiece.

I visited the website and found that there are several different boxes available. They have themes ranging from love, peace, and joy. All of them with something a little special. You can purchase one box or you can subscribe and receive a year's worth of boxes.

And then I thought these would be a great gift for Mother's Day or for a student who is away at school. You know something for that person who doesn't really need anything, but you want to give them something. The person who would enjoy a thoughtful gift.

Now that you know what I think of the box. There is a bonus. They are doing a giveaway. You could win a year subscription to Love and Blessed. All you have to do is visit their site and fill out the form. So go and check it out.

3 Simple Car Care Tips and a Car Jump Starter Giveaway

If you are anything like me, I haven't had to much luck with my vehicles in the past. Part of it was my own fault. And then some of it was simple ignorance about automobiles. So here are three things I wish I would have known a long time ago when it comes with vehicles.

1. Get Routine Oil Changes

Yes, it seems like a no brainer, but changing your oil on a regular basis does keep your car running smoother and longer. It always runs smoother after an oil change. And you get more miles per gallon after an oil change.

2. Find a Good Mechanic

This is probably the key to maintaining your car. I recently had an experience where I changed mechanics. I took the car in for an oil change. The mechanic told me that he didn't check my battery because it was difficult to get to. Red flags went off in my mind. If he isn't willing to do his job with the routine maintenance, how will he treat my car when I need major repairs? Will he actually complete all the repairs? Or will he do the minimum work necessary. Needless to say, I won't be taking my car back to that shop.

3. Listen to Your Car

If your car isn't acting the way it used to, it might need some work. Better to catch it earlier than later. Trust me I was the queen of having major repair bills because I didn't complete repairs when I first knew there might be something wrong with my car. Taking care of that little repair immediately can save you big money.

My New Hero

Yes, I have a new hero. There is someone I want to be like. It might surprise a few of you, but I want to be like Louise from Bob's Burgers.

Why would I choose Louise Belcher as my new hero? She's an animated character on a cartoon. There are a few reasons. Where should I start?

Louise has loads of energy. She has a zest for life. If she wants to do something she puts her all into it. She has screams alright if she thinks it's a great idea. She is passionate about everything she does. There is no in between with Louise.

Louise is not afraid to be herself. She wears those bunny ears all the time. She loves them and she doesn't care what anybody has to say about it. In fact when someone stole her style she went and hunted down the guy who hat. Her hat and her green dress are her signature and nobody is going to take it away from you.

Goes After What She Wants

Louise doesn't let much stop her when she decides to get something. Yes, sometimes she goes a little overboard like she did in the video below. But hey, she is a girl who just doesn't let anything hold her back.

She Knows How To Take Control

Eventually, everyone realizes that Louise does know best and they let her take control of any situation. Even the police let her take charge.

So now you know why I love Louise. Who is your favorite character on Bob's Burgers?

Royal Rose Hydrating Sereum

I was recently fortunate to receive a free sample of Royal Rose Hydrating System from Valentia in exchange for an honest review. Here’s what I think of this product.

First, when I received my hydrating solution through the mail. The product was packed well so it wasn’t damaged. There were no disappointments when I opened that box. I really liked the packaging of the serum. The box is fairly simple with a white background gold trim and a couple of roses on the box. It looks nice.

Valentia has packaged this in a 1.18 fl oz jar with a pump to dispense the serum. I pumped a little onto my finger tip and it does have a slight rosy scent. I really like that.

It’s no wonder that it smells like roses, it does contain Rose Damascena oil which is fabulous for your skin. It also contains Vitamin B, Rosehip Oil, Primrose Oil, Bearberry and Lavender. It’s packed full of skin nourishers.

It was now time to try it on my skin. I spread it over my skin. It felt smooth and moist. It didn’t leave an oily feeing that many moisturizers leave behind. The product is best used under another crème. It’s the first layer. But it does make your skin look wonderful.

The one complaint I have with this serum is not actually with the product. The instructions that come along with the product are written in a microscopic print. I’m sure many of the individuals who are using this product are beginning to age. Small print is difficult to read. Make the print a little larger.

I have tried a couple of other products by Valentia and I was pleased with them. But this is my favorite product that I have tried so far. I liked how rich this made my skin feel. So I recommend it to anyone who is looking for a product that will add a healthy glow to their skin.

You can visit Valentia to learn more about their other products.

Disclaimer: Like I stated at the beginning of this review I did receive a free sample of this product to review, but the opinions are all mine.

Fantastic Moments of the Week

Every week bring those moments that turn out to be just kind of fantastic! There are times when you aren't sure how things will work out, but they always turn out well. Here are a few of the great moments in my week.

First, my friend Heather from Geek Girl Brunch, provided me with some tickets to Fantasticon in Lansing, Michigan. I had loads of fun. It was a fabulous getaway. I didn't know what to expect from the show, but it was really fun. Not a huge show, but it was great to see some new things in the world of comics and geekdom. You can check out some of what I saw in my Fantasticon Photos post.

I haven't treated myself to anything silly and cute in a while. Right now I shouldn't be going wild and crazy with this, but I did order a pair of bunny hair clips from Kyoto Charms. It arrived this week, and I wasn't disappointed in my choice. The clips are adorable!

I had to wait through half of the work week to find out if I would get this Saturday off. You know those work schedule things. I knew that I would have the week off after Sunday. It's complicated the way we get our vacation time at my job. But I wasn't sure if I would get today off. I was pleasantly surprised when I got Saturday off! It felt great to sleep in this morning. I love that supervisor of mine! You rock!

My friend contacted me yesterday to see if I wanted to get a pedicure today! Yes I did! I really needed it because my feet have been hurting more. I think I need some new shoes. Anyway, here are my toes after the pedicure.

They look like I stepped in a pot of gold. I'm all set for St. Patrick's Day! I can't wait!

Next, I went to Sweets So Geek for their Pie Pan Auction. One of the things I love about this shop is their creativity. They truly enjoy what they do. And their desserts are always memorable. I got the Cherry Bomb. Chocolate cake with a piece of cherry pie inside the cake. It is delightful. And well one piece is enough dessert to last a couple of days. Back to the Pie Pan auction though. Here are some pictures of the great creations that they auctioned off.

It was difficult to decide which of these items I liked best and was worthy of a bid. It was a toss up between the Harlequin and Cheshire Cat. I really like how Geeks So Sweet has used their niche market to make a place for those who march t the beat of a different drummer.

Here's to hoping that all of you have had a truly fantastic week. And what has made your week fantastic?

Pineapple Mango Jam

I have talked to so many people who are going to the tropics for their vacation in the past few weeks. It has made me want something a little taste of the tropics myself. And since I can't afford a vacation to the Caribbean, I decided to make some pineapple mango jam. It's super easy, and it will make you feel like you are sitting on the beach. Well that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but you get the drift.

Here's What You Need

1 fresh pineapple chopped
2 fresh mangoes chopped
1 Tablespoon minced ginger
1/2 cup of honey
1 teaspoon lemon zest
1 lemon juiced

Here's What You Do

Throw you pineapple in a skillet. Cook it for 10 minutes or until the pineapple just starts to soften. Mash it up a little. Next throw in your mangoes. Cook it for another 10 minutes. Keep mashing it up as it is cooking. Add the ginger and the honey next. Keep mashing it up for about another 10 minutes. Then add your lemon juice and zest. Cook until all the pineapple is soft. You want it to be a little chunky.

Can't You Just Be Happy?

Have you ever had something really good happen to you? And you're feeling happy? You want to share your happiness with someone else. You tell them you're happy. And you are expecting something back. You want them to be happy for you. But to your surprise they aren't.

This happened to me this week. You see I asked for an extra day off work to go along with my vacation week. And I got it! Management was good to me! I was happy! I had nothing to complain about. But there was a problem. My co-workers were not happy. In fact they were quite unhappy.

You see one of them had tried to adjust their schedule to make their vacation start time begin a day earlier. And it didn't get approved. She was mad. She told me they wouldn't let me do that. She aked how I got the extra day. I told her that I asked the supervisor how to fill out the paperwork so that I could use an extra vacation day to get a longer vacation. I did it the way my supervisor showed me.

Another co-worker was angry because she had to work with a co-worker she didn't like that day. She went to a manager and said you need to change that schedule.

I was a bit confused at this point. Something really good happened to me. And nobody else wanted to be happy. Why couldn't they just have said I'm happy for you? I would have totally got it if they said I'm happy for you, but how can I make that happen for me?

I guess my point is why can't we just be happy for each other when something good happens to them? Maybe if we take less time focusing in on what we didn't get, and focus in on the good things more good things will happen around us.

Wake Up Wednesday Linky Party 111

This week presented me the chance to do something that I've needed to do for awhile. I got out of town and did something different. You can check out some of the photos on Fantasticon Photos. I love going to the conventions and seeing all of the different people. And I really love the chance to go and hear the artists tell about the new stories they have come up with. But it's time for a party now. Hope you enjoy all the great great blogs that participate.

Homestead Tips on Tuesday: Earth Friendly Gardening for Your Backyard
The (mis)Adventures of a "Born Again" Farm Girl

Why do folks garden? The simple answer is, to provide themselves and their families with better quality food for their table. So why then, in our attempts to provide better food do we include things in our gardens that shouldn't be there? No, I am not talking about the plants..... I am talking about the garden structures themselves and the techniques used to grow the plants.

Craft Room...A Sneak Peek
Homespuns 'n Hayfields

I decided to give you a sneak peek into my craft room.  It's in desperate need of a clean-up so I'm not quite ready to expose all of it yet.  The craft room is in it's early stages but usable and I enjoy spending time in there.  Of course I want everything to be "cute" (there's that word again) and my hubby thinks I'm nuts.  To me, making it cute makes it more enjoyable to spend time in and revs up those creative juices that I so desperately need.
