A Little Bit of Gratitude

I just realized that it's been a while since I've told the world about some of the things that I am really grateful for in life. So let's get it going.

I am so grateful for all the medical staff that is taking such great care of my mom. Without their expertise she wouldn't have made it.

My aunt's and cousins are so fantastic. I live about six hours from my mother's home. So visiting her on a regular basis is difficult. They have picked up the ball and gone to visit her a regular basis. I'm not sure that I would have that many regular visitors. It makes a big difference in how she feels.

You all have no idea how much I appreciate my friend, who was more than willing to go feed the cat when I had to make that emergency trip. It's those little things that make you appreciate your friends.

I am so unbelievably grateful for FMLA. Just knowing that I can go over and help my mom out has without any difficulties from my employer has made this a lot easier to get through.

Those are just a few of the things that I am grateful for this week. Let me know what is going on in your life that makes you feel grateful.

Remember back in the 70's there was a television show called zoom? It was on Pbs in the afternoon line up for children. Well, if you do you'll be disappointed because that is the not the zoom I am going to talk about today.

The Plot

I'm going to talk about the 2016 movie Zoom. The movie stars Alison Pill who plays Emma. Emma works in a sex doll factory, but she draws comics on the side. She has created a film director character named Edward, who has created a film starring the wanna be novelist Michelle.

What I Think

If the plot I described above sounds a little confusing, it is. The story weaves together three different stories that are interconnected. I actually like the story lines. Emma who has decided that she needs breast augmentation. And she spends her savings to do it, but then she doesn't feel that it is really her. And she wants the surgery undone. She doesn't have enough money to do this.

I like how it points out that you may think you want something, but it may not be exactly what you wanted. I also like that she enjoys comics. The animated sections of the movie I really enjoyed, but her character Edward I didn't care for too much. He was self centered though.

And Michelle is interesting. She is beautiful, but she wants to be taken more seriously. And she puts together a story that connects all of the stories in the movie.

This movie is not excellent. There are times when it is a little confusing, but if you stick it out to the end it makes sense.

It has an arthouse feel about it. And it does have some graphic sexual scenes. So it doesn't surprise me that it wasn't a big hit. But I can see it developing a cult following. The main reason for that is it has some really quirky characters.

So you can decide for yourself whether you want to watch this movie!

It's The Oxygen!

I call my brother to see if he has talked to the healthcare professionals about what they see happening with mom. He said he has. They say she is still quite weak. I wonder how much strength does she need to return to her home?

My brother feels that it isn't going that well, and he is concerned that she is just giving up on things. I wonder to myself, if this is true. Or is she just tired today, and will she be more encouraging tomorrow?

He claims that it's the oxygen that is the real problem. She is still needing it, and thy want her not to rely on it before she can go home. He is unsure if that will happen.

The whole conversation makes me wonder what will happen. And I decide this is something I have little control over, and I just feel like taking a nap.

Super Easy Upcycled Gifts 1

My faithful followers already know that I love to thrift. You also know that I love to upcycle items that I purchase. Recently, I had to make an emergency trip to visit family. You can read It's Five Am and The Phone Rings, if you want to learn why I needed to make that trip. I had to have someone take care of my animals while I was gone. One of my friends stepped up to the plate. And I decided I needed to put together a gift for her.

If you read my post from yesterday, Thrifty Finds Week 6, you can see some of the really great items I scored during a thrifting trip. I had those items with me, so here are two of the gifts I came up with that are really easy to make.

The two items that are going to be upcycled today for this gif are on the left hand side of the picture above. The phone frame is first item. And that little top with the hearts all over it is the next item.

I decided that the angels on that frame were really cute, but it just needed a little extra pizzazz! So I decided it just needed a little coat of paint. I grabbed some pink paint. And I went to work.
This is how it turned out.

I thought it turned out just as I expected. I didn't have any photos with me or a way to print any out so I decided she could pick one of her own out to place in the frame.

So on to the next super easy upcycled goodie. I purchased a pair of leggings earlier that week. I decided since my friend has a love of leggings I would add a little something extra to a pair for her.
I got out that shirt, isn't the fabric fun? I cut out two hearts from the fabric, and then pinned them onto the leggings around the knee area. Then I got out the fabric glue, and attached the hearts.
They turned out like this. It added a personal touch to the leggings.

I gave my friend this and a couple other items for watching the beasties. I was a little worried when I was making the leggings that I would be forcing my love of cuteness on my friend. But she loved the gifts. So this upcycling was quite the success. And it allowed me to complete the two projects I reqire myself to complete before I go thrifting again.

Let me know what you think of the items. And do you have anymore suggestions fir items that could be upcycled.

Thrifty Finds Week Six

Once again it is time to look at some of those fantastic items I have found when I go thrifting. I talked to a friend recently, who had to downsize her home. She told me do you know how hard it is to give up thrifting for an entire year? I can't imagine! So here are some of my finds for this week.

I found a really cute picture frame with angels on it. I t cost under a dollar an I knew exactly what I wanted to do with it as soon as I saw it. The little dress next to it was only a dollar. I wasn't quite sure what way I wanted to go with that dress, but I knew I liked the heart pattern on the fabric. I also found an unopened package of Tim Holtz paper for less than $3. That is always a score.  And of course that little wooden plaque was only .50 cents. And a jar of seashells topped off this picture.
I picked up a really great sweater for $3. It has those blue greens in it that I really like. And I found a pair of pants that match perfectly. I couldn't believe my luck. I also was able to get a Frozen lunch box full of crayons for $1. And an adorable little clipboard with a pen and paper to match it for less than a $1.
I also found a really pretty table cloth with pastel flowers on it for $2. It was truly a great find. If you look closer in the picture you can see more of the sweater.  Aren't those colors fabulous?
Aren't all of those crayons fabulous? I've always thought they were fun. And I do love to color, so these aren't going to be put to some good use.
Then I found an awesome flower! I loved it. And long term readers know that I do love flowers. At the cost of fifty cents it jumped right into my cart. There was also a cat hoodie that I couldn't pass up for $1.50. And then a black pair of pants for work. Black is always a great color to wear to work because everything gets so dirty. I always can use new plates too!

And here is what that cat hoodie looks like a little closer up. I didn't get a picture of it, but some of the cats have glasses. Yes, we have entered crazy cat world.

These are a few of my finds for the week. Stay tuned to see what becomes of them. And let me know what thrifty finds you have scored recently.

Bring Me Some Clothes

I am finally home from that trip to see my mother. I decide it is time to call mom. I want to know how she is doing.

I pick up the phone, and punch send. It rings and it goes to voice mail. I know that she doesn't check the voice mail. So I don't bother leaving a message. It just complicates things for her. Then the phone rings. I look to see who is calling. It's her.

She immediately asks me if I can bring her some clothes. She doesn't have any clothes. I tell her I can't come over today. I reminder her that it's a six hour drive. She replies when are you going to come over? I want to go home!

I think to myself, what do I say? I feel as though I am in an impossible position. I cannot take off and get her what she wants at the moment, and I cannot tell her that she can go home immediately.

The Skeleton Code

We all have secrets. And most of us want to keep them that way. In the book The Skeleton Code individuals reveal some of those secrets.

The Book

Psst, I have a secret. But I don't want anyone to know it. This book takes a look at what happens when we keep secrets. It uses humor to point out that we all have them. And often we will go to drastic measures to keep those secrets. Some things aren't meant to be shared with everyone, but keeping secrets for too long can be unhealthy. The first part of the book is satirical. And there are portions that will make you laugh. And the last section of the book offers some self help ideas.

What I Thought of The Book

I liked that this book approached a somewhat serious issue with a sense of humor. I think that we all often take ourselves too seriously when we want or need to make changes in our lives. But sometimes humor can point out really important things. And I like how the author points out that there is a cure for these hidden secrets.

Who Should Read This Book

If you have a sense of humor, and you are looking for a book that will help you deal with some of your inner secrets, this book is for you. But if you are looking for a book that is a more traditional self help book, you may not enjoy this one.

The Authors

The Skeleton Code is co-written by Alla Campanella and Ken Massey. Alla is an artist and photographer. Ken wears many hats in life, which include life coach and minister. You can learn more about the book and authors by visiting their website.

She's Moving You Know

The phone rings again today, you don't have the number listed in your contacts. But you think to yourself, you do have a sick parent. You should answer the phone.

You answer the phone and it is your aunt. She tells you she went to visit your mom today. And she was so glad that she is doing so much better than she was last week.

You talk about how things are going for awhile, and then she says she's moving you know? At first you have to think about what is going on? Is she changing facilities? Or maybe she's moving to another room. And then you get your answer, she is moving to a private room. And you think to yourself finally we catch a break.

Mother Nature's Way of Freshening Your Home

It's winter. And if you are like me, you miss opening the doors and windows to get some fresh air. But believe it or not there are a few things that you can do to keep your home smelling a little fresher in the winter without buying aerosol cans to mask that stale winter household air.

Most everyone knows that fresh plants help circulate the air in the winter. But if you plant some herbs such as mint, rosemary and basil in pots, they will give off a fresh scent. And these aromatic herbs serve a double purpose, you will be able to cook with fresh herbs throughout the winter.

Busy Beeswax

Candles are a staple in many homes during the winter. Most individuals love the variety of scents they can provide in a dwelling. But go for a candle made out of beeswax if you have the opportunity. The candles give off a slight honey scent. And the natural wax produces negative ions that the air of odors, pollens, smoke, viruses, mold, dust, dust mites, and other allergens and hazards.

The Cleaners

Purchase as many environmentally friendly cleaners as possible. My personal favorites are products from Seventh Generation. I like that I can purchase dish soap in lavender scents, and I really like the laundry detergent. It is so great to be able to purchase a product that comes in a container that is obviously made from recycled materials.

The Runway

The carpets and floors in our house are a place where odors hide. It can be difficult to get those scents out of the house. Keep in mind that synthetic products hold in dirt and odors. If you have the option choose flooring made out of straw or bamboo. You won't regret it.

So what are your tips for keep your home fresh during the winter?

Don't You Want Some Cough Syrup?

You look around for a place to sit. There isn't a chair. So you decide that the walker has that little shelf thing on it. You decide that will make a good seat. You plop down.

She's coughing a little. And it looks like it is a lot of work for her to breathe. She tells you that it's worse later at night when she is trying to sleep.

You remember that the doctor ordered some cough syrup while she was at the hospital. You ask her do you want to take some cough syrup? She tells you I don't know. You inform her that it could make it a little easier to sleep. She says yes, that would be good.

The nurse comes in with her medicine for the evening. You tell her that she is having trouble breathing, and there is that cough. The nurse replies, everybody has it. You remind the nurse that the doctor did write a prescription for a cough medicine maybe it would be good to give her some.

You wonder to yourself how is this going to work out when I need to go home?

Playing On The Porch

I've always found it relaxing to sit outside and read a book. So I've been thinking about putting together an outdoor room this summer. I have a really cool enclosed front porch so it is totally possible. Here are a few of the tips that I've put together for putting together a plan for that outdoor area where you want to spend time relaxing.

Take a look around your area. You are going to want something that is going to be comfortable and well lit. After all you will want to spend time there reading, painting or just drinking an iced tea. In order to make an area that you will enjoy start looking for great deals on items to make your relaxation retreat comfy.

All Purpose

Make sure that what you plan fits your needs. The furniture and fabrics that you choose needs to be able to withstand rain and sun. But there is no need to fear there are loads of materials around now that can withstand both. You also want to make sure that the furniture is lightweight. So that it can be rearranged for your needs.

Cool Summer Evenings

It does get cool on some summer evenings. And you certainly want a place where you can sit in the spring and fall. If you have an outdoor patio, you could consider a fire pit. You could build one, or you can purchase one. I had a friend who simple dug a hole, and surrounded the hole with rocks. The area looked fabulous. And it was an extremely cost effective way of creating an outdoor fire pit.

Privacy Please

I looked out my porch, and I thought to myself, I do want some privacy. Maybe it's not a bad thing to allow those bushes in front of the area to grow a little more. But you can also use large plants or a trellis to add some privacy to your backyard retreat.
Do you have an outdoor living space? And what are some of your tips for creating that comfy area?

How Long Do I Have To Stay Here?

You go into that room. She isn't looking real well, but she does have pneumonia. And there is that little detail that she did have a heart attack less than a week ago. There's that cough, and then she is tired.

She sits up when you come through the door. But she is complaining about feeling awful. She says she hurts. You ask where and she replies all over.

Then she asks the bombshell, how long do I have to stay here? You have to give an answer that she isn't going to want to hear, but you know you have to be honest. It's going to be two maybe three weeks before you can go home.

Baked Portobello Mushroom Sandwich

You long term readers already know, I am a fan of the Portobello mushroom. And here's a great tasting and super easy to prepare Portobello mushroom sandwich.

Here's What You Need

Hamburger Buns
Sliced Cheese
4 large Portobello mushrooms
1/3 cup olive oil
4 garlic cloves
fresh rosemary
fresh thyme

Here's What You Do

Preheat your oven to 400 degrees. Coat your mushrooms on both sides with olive oil. Just brush it on the mushroom. Then place the mushrooms on a baking pan round side down. Slice each garlic clove into quarters, and arrange it on top of the mushroom. Then add rosemary and thyme sprigs on top of that. Next place the pan in the oven for about 25 minutes. Once they are cooked place them on a bun and add a slice of cheese. And serve it up with some chips.

Did You Know?

Vitamin B6 is involved in over 100 chemical reactions in your body. And guess what, 1 cup of Portobello mushrooms contain 10% of the amount of B6 that is recommended daily.

You're Not Going To Move Her

It's time to return one of those phone calls. You know you need to talk to your aunt. She wants to know what's going on. You call her, and she responds. She tells you that your mom called her during the night.

You tell her about the events that occurred in the morning. Your aunt says she called your brother at four in the morning? You guys are going to have a hard time with her. Your aunt tells you that she isn't happy about being at that facility. But that she has to stay there so that she can recuperate.

You inform your aunt that she wanted you to take her home. You inform her that your mother that you will go look for some other places that she can go through rehab at, but that I couldn't take her home at that moment.

Your aunt informs you she'd better behave herself or they are going to kick her out of there. Then she will never get to go back to her apartment. She then asks you're not going to move her are you?

Thrifting Finds Week Five

So another week of thrifting has taken place. I forced myself to wait until I had completed at least two projects from the last thrifting expedition. It motivated me to complete some things around the house, and to create items out of those thrifty finds. So what did I find this week?
I have always been a fan of magazines. But it feels like they have become so expensive. So I picked up a couple at the local thrift store. I spent $1.25 on three of them. I also picked up some of those really cute plastic bags that I will need for that craft fair that my friend and I participate in. And well a Snoopy toy is a must. And one of those impulse buys a maraca. All of it cost less than $4.00.
I got a little children's fairy book. I just love fairies, and the pictures are going to be a fairly cool little project I think. I grabbed a children's grab bag which cost $1.00. It has loads of little useful items. Mardi Gras coins were included in that packet woohoo! I also found a memory book for .50! I don't really like the design on it, but the rings and paper are well worth the change I spent. And then that super cute fisher price toy was $1.00. I plan to put those to use with those adorable storage jars I made. Check out the post for a really cute DIY project. DIY Hello Kitty Storage Jars
So there is a great project for the skirt. which was $1.50. I think it was super cute. And well hopefully, you all will enjoy the creation. The frogs were another grab bag that actually cost more. I debated, but I got it. I was a little disappointed with this purchase. The three frogs I really liked had a chip in each on of them, but no need to fear I have ideas for those chipped frogs. And if you see little cigar boxes you always have to pick them up. They are just so great for storage and projects. This one was $.50. And the book had some really adorable woodland creatures in it, and well you can never have enough of those.
I scored a super crafting find with that crafting foil. It only cost a dollar. The lace blouse was too difficult to pass up. And the little bracelet goes perfect with an outfit I have. Valentine's Day will be here before we know it. It's less than a month away. So those love bug glasses will probably show up in a post somewhere. And once again the Ranger Rick book jumped off the shelves into my cart.

Let me know if you have ideas on ways I can use these thrifty finds this week. And don't forget to follow the blog you'll be able to see the thrifty finds and how I put them to use.

You're Kidding Right?

Another morning arrived and you hear the phone ring again. This time it is 4:30am. Once again it's your bother. That's twice this week he has interrupted your sleep. But then again you know it is probably important so you answer it.

He apologizes for calling in the middle of the night. You think get to the point I want to get over whatever it is he needs me to do.

It's mom, there's a problem where she is staying. She says they won't help her out and that she is sick. Can you go check on her?

You get up and get dressed. You head down the elevator outside. You walk in the parking lot, and you start sliding. Oh, yes, you think to yourself there was an ice storm warning tonight. You drive across town to the facility.

You go into the facility and go to your mother's room. She immediately tells you, "You have to get me out of here right now." You think to yourself You're kidding right?

Tips To Preparing Great Fish

Everyone knows that fish is super healthy. But if it isn't prepared right it can be one of those foods you have to eat instead of enjoying. So here are some tips on preparing fish that tastes great.

You Nose Knows

If you go to the market to purchase fish, make sure you take a whiff of it. If it smells fishy, then pass it up. Fresh fish should smell like the ocean. The market should smell clean. If it smells like ammonia buyer beware

Fillet Please

If you don't know how to fillet the fish, ask the market to cut the fish up for you. It will just make life simpler. There is no shame in not knowing how to fillet the fish. Better to have it done right, than to spend money on good fish and have it go all wrong.

Cover Me

Before you store the fish you purchased, rinse it off. Then place it on a flat platter with the skin side up. Cover it with plastic wrap. And then place baggies full of ice on top of it. Make sure to use the fresh fish within 24 hours.

Fresh Vs. Frozen

Like most things in life, fresh fish is going to taste much better than frozen. But sometimes you just can't get fresh fish so it is perfectly acceptable to use frozen fish.

Is It Done Yet?

You can use a thin metal skewer and insert it into the fish in order to know when you fish is ready to serve. When you place the skewer into the fish there should be a slight resistance, and then it should be body temperature or slightly higher if you press the skewer to the back of your hand.

Tools of The Trade

Don't use tongs! You should use a flexible fish spatula if you are a more advanced cook. But inexperienced cooks should use a non-stick pan and a plastic spatula.

Do you have any other tips to preparing great fish?

It's Five AM and The Phone Rings

It's five am and the phone rings. You think to yourself who is calling me at this time of day? And the phone announces that it is your brother. Your next thought is that can't be good, he never calls me. You probably shouldn't ignore the call.

You answer the phone, and your brother states "Sorry, to call you in the middle of the night." You think to yourself, will these people never figure out that I work in the middle of the night so I'm probably already awake at five am? You say it's okay, it's almost bedtime.

And then he announces why he has called. Mom had a heart attack. Now you know why he called. He states that he is going to go to her place after he takes a nap. It is an extremely long drive. And the weather isn't cooperating. It will be about 12 hours before he can get there. You tell him you will head over to her place. It will be about 8 hours before you can get there.

You start throwing items in a bag. And there is a second call. The doctor has just telephoned your brother and he says we need to come as soon as possible. You kick into gear. There are so many things you have to do before you get on the road.

And you wonder to yourself how will this day move forward? What changes will it bring about?

Magic Wand DIY

Little girls love to play with magic wands. And they are a fantastic compliment if you decide to put together a fairy costume. But you may not be able to find a wand that fits your costume or you personality at the local store. So of course I decided to make one. I knew I wanted a pink wand this time but how would I do it.

I remembered that pink scarf that I purchased at one of my thrifting trips. It was in my Thrifty Finds Week Three post. You can check out some of my other fabulous finds for that week by following the link. They are always pretty cool. That pink scarf I'm talking about is in that basket. I decided that it is was time to put that scarf to use in the magic wand project.

Here's What You Need

pink fabric
a stick
pink paint
a star pattern
hot glue gun

Here's What You Do

Take the stick and peel all the bark off of it. It can get a little messy so make sure you put some paper underneath it. Next take your star and pink it to the pink fabric.
I really liked the pink shiny material from that scarf. What I didn't think about was the elastic in the scarf. And that the scarf was a little feathery. It was a little messy to cut out. So keep this in mind if you get a scarf like this one. I originally planned to sew the star together and stuff it. But the elastic made it impossible for me to sew together and keep it looking like a star. I decided that I would need to glue it together.

I took that stick and painted it pink. It was super easy to do. Next I got out that glue gun. I glued one of the starts to the stick. I looked fine. I glued the second one to the stick. Then I glued the edges of the star together.
I like the way it turned out. The fluffiness of the fabric didn't need stuffing for it to look full. And gluing the edges of the star made it more sturdy. Let me know what you think of the project. But I do believe that is a super simple and inexpensive craft project for those girls of all ages who want to play fairy.

Oil Boom

Did you know that the first major oil strike was made in 1901, on this day near Beaumont, Texas. It is the beginning of a love affair between America and petroleum. Over the past few years the use of petroleum based fuels has become a huge discussion. What are the pros and cons of this fuel source? And will it run out?

Well, pretty much everybody agrees that it will run out. It could be as soon as forty years. That's not really that long if you ask me. So if I could have my way, I would love to see a few things change.

And the one place that I would love to see a change is the auto industry. I would absolutely love to see a move toward more electric cars. I've heard individuals complain that they would have to plug the car in. When I hear this, I always think about when I was growing up in northern Minnesota. It gets really cold in Minnesota in the winter. And we all know cold weather can be hard on a vehicle. A lot of individuals plug their car in in order to keep it warm through those cold nights. Nobody thinks that is strange or inconvenient. It's just much more practical than having a vehicle that won't start in the cold.

So why would plugging your vehicle in be a hassle in other places? Wouldn't it just become accepted? Wouldn't it just become part of our daily routine?

We all know that one thing will not change the dependence on fossil fuels, but doesn't have to start happening?

Thrifty Finds Week 4

It's time to see what I picked up this week when I went out thrifting. This week I tried a new thrift store. I was not really sure before I entered, and it is not my favorite store in town. But I did find something a little weird at the store. So here are the items I've found this week.
Did I mention all of this for less than $4.

My first picture has loads of fabric. The left is all for some nice little fabric that I really liked. The middle is a shirt to wear to work. Believe it or not, I go through two or three shirts each month at my job. They either wind up with holes in them or so stained that I don't want to go into public with them on. And on the right I really loved the Strawberry Shortcake that was appliqued on the dressed.

Once again more clothes. The jeans at the bottom of the left pile are for work. The stack on left are for me. A girl always needs some new clothes doesn't she? Three dollars on new clothes is a pretty good deal though. I also got a blank and top made out of a fleece fabric that will show up again in the future.

This bunch contains some children's books. I just can't get enough of them. I got a Chinese lantern. Chinese New Year is coming up you know. I think that cookbook may be the most fun find of the day. It's a cook book with all of the recipes focused on a blender from the 70's? Can't wait to dig through that one. And the shoes are a score for a buck! I won't feel guilty about painting them. And if I screw up, I will have lost a buck big deal. And I have been looking for a bat. This one isn't a mini bat, but I still think it will be good for what I have planned.
Now the last picture has a bowl that I couldn't decide whether I loved or hated. Sometimes I look at it and think I love it. And then the next moment I turn around and think no it's just not right. Since there were moments I loved it I plunked down the five bucks for it. And the little goose cross stitch is actually the item that I have been searching for. Actually the two little hangers that came inside the cross stitch packet is what I have been looking for. I will not be making the kit. I need those mini hangers for something else. I also got more book and a cool pad of paper.

I guarantee a few of these items will make it back into future posts. And let me know if there are any special items that you have been looking for?

You Are Here Notebook

A couple of weeks ago, I found a three ring binder at a thrift store. And one of my goals for the month is to organize my clippings. I decided to personalize it just a little. You can check it out on my Thrifty Finds Week Three post.

I decided that I would coat the notebook with gesso. I thought that would give me a good background to start out with. It's always good to prep your items. Then I covered the notebook in pink paint. I really wanted a pink notebook. And I wasn't sure how paint would work on vinyl.

Then I decided that I have a silk screen print saying You Are Here. I decided that this would be really appropriate for this binder. So I attached the template to the notebook.
I used the squeegee and spread the ink on the notebook. It is difficult to see in the picture, but the ink has glitter in it. I loved it.

Then I removed the stencil.
I had a craft fail on my hands. What do you do now? Start from scratch or repair or toss it out? It's a big question. I decided that I would try to repair it. I decided to pull out the silver paint pen.
I thought to myself that I could try to add more pink paint, but I decided against it. While I looked at the finished product, I thought to myself. The binder didn't turn out the way I wanted it to, but it reminds me that right now I am here. That isn't where I will be in the future. I will use the screen printing process again. But I'll have to learn more about how to paint on vinyl successfully.

Have you had any craft fails recently?

Question For The Bobbleheads

Dear Bobbleheads of the World

I found out that today is National Bobblehead Day. And I thought I would write you a letter and congratulate you on your day!

You bobbleheads have been around for quite a while now. In the 1800's you made your entry with toy cats. You all started shaking your head back then, and you have just kept shaking your head through the years.

In the 1920's someone had the bright idea that your springy heads would be great on sports figures. Then came along the 90's and you were produced in plastic. And it moved to pretty much every famous person.

I have to admit one of my favorite of you bobbleheads is this one.
I mean come on that's great when Beetlejuice is rocking his head back and forth.

But I do have one question for you bobbleheads. Do you ever get tired of being so agreeable? You are constantly shaking your head yes. Drop me a line and let me know.

I Just Can't Cook Without

There are so many wonderful kitchen utensils now. There are gadgets that make it so easy to cook. There are juicers, there are shredders, and there are shrimp forks.

Now I do love my juicer. I can prepare fresh squeezed orange juice to go along with those beautiful Bannana Waffles I love so much. But if push comes to shove, I can squeeze that orange juice out another way. So I can cook without this utensil.

Then there is that nut chopper. Yes, it is so much easier to chop those nuts up for my oatmeal and granola with that chopper. Oh, how the walnuts, almonds and pecans respond to this device. But I also believe that I can live without it. I don't want to, but I can, if I have to.

But there is an item in the kitchen that I can't cook without. I just can't live without the knife. I can chop those vegetables for stir fry. I can cut an apple into pieces. And I can slice that meat I have prepared. Cooking just wouldn't be the same without it.

So which kitchen utensil do you absolutely have to have in order to cook?

Staying In Touch

I have to admit staying in touch with people is not one of my strengths. I really do like spending time by myself. And well I work an odd shift so that kind of complicates things. I think about calling people around 3:00am. Most people don't like that. So when I do think of contacting people I just don't. But how do I keep in touch with individuals on a more regular basis?

A couple of months ago, I picked up some coloring books that were actually postcards. They are pretty cool! I really enjoy coloring, and well the postcards are my own works of art in a way. The first book that I colored in was Secret Garden.
It has loads of flowers to color. And I can color them any way I want to. But I'm sure there are those of you asking how does this help me stay in touch with others? I also enjoy receiving mail. I used to send out a lot of postcards through postcrossing. I just stopped for a while. And I looked at the site today, and I remembered how much fun it was to receive those cards. So I decided I should stay in touch with individuals who live far from me by sharing some of these postcards that I color.

I thought this may be a really personal way of me letting individuals know that I am thinking of them this year.

How are you planning on staying in touch with those you care about?

Starting The Year Off Grateful

I figured it would be great to start the new year out with some of the good things that are going on in my life. Some of the things I am really grateful for as this new year begins.

I could hardly believe it. I got both of my recent holidays off at work. That doesn't always happen. I had to check and double check the work list to assure that my name was not listed as one of the individuals who had to come in to work. It was awesome! I didn't! I love paid holidays.

Finishing A Little Project

I actually completed two little projects this past week. They aren't big ones, but hey when you have as difficult a time as I do completing projects two in one week is something like a miracle! Here's one of them. And you'll see another one at a later point.

Jc's Pie Bites

If you like chocolate mint combinations, these are just for you. I picked them up at the store on a whim. And now whenever I see them. I buy a bag. Fortunately, I don't see them that often.

Hair Accessories

I love my brand new hair comb. I wanted something with feathers on it for my hair. I loved the color. And I usually don't buy hair combs. I thought I needed one. And I wanted something with feathers since they are all the rage.
I got it from Le Chaim on Etsy. Her items are really cute! Check them out!

So what are you grateful for this new year?

Goals For January

Yesterday, you read about my Word of The Year. It's a challenge for me to begin promoting myself. But there are little things I want to accomplish along the way. In the month of January I want to accomplish some things. These are my main goals for the month.

Luna Lovegood Costume

Harry Potter Day is coming up this month. Last year it was so much fun! There were so many great costumes. This year I think it is going to be bigger and better than last year. Sweets So Geek has teamed up with The Salvation Army for Diagon Alley!
I love that this is going to be a free event for the community that all of us will enjoy! Of course there is a costume contest. And this year I want to put together a really great Luna Lovegood costume. She was actually my favorite character in the movies. I just think I relate to her quirkiness. But I'm going to work out a great costume. I don't think it will be too difficult, her style is kind of mine.

Organize Clippings

I have loads of little clippings, and pictures that I use for that art journal. They are spread out everywhere. I want to organize them a bit more. And it's a project you may see more of in the next month.

Make A Logo

My friend and I decided we're going to try and do a craft fair and one farmer's market this year. I want to put together a logo for the items I create. I have something in mind. I just need to put it on paper. It's my goal to make that happen this month.

Save For Vacation

Yep, every year, my vacation rolls around, and I need extra money. This year I want to start putting aside some money for that much needed and deserved vacation.

That is what I really want to accomplish this month. What do you want to get going in your life?

This Year's Word

A new year is here, and it's time for me to choose a Word of the Year. Last year in my post New Year New Word, I selected the word detail as my word for 2016. And yes, I did make some progress on becoming more detail oriented. There are some things that I pay more attention to than I used to. I probably will never be a person who cares a lot about details, but I am making effort to do the necessary.

So what is the word for this year? The word is PROMOTE.

So why did I choose promote as my word of the year? It's simple I have loads of great ideas. And I put some of them in action. I talk about getting things moving. But somehow I don't do it. So this year I want to make a concentrated effort to promote some of the great ideas I have. I want to make progress. And I really want to move toward some of my goals. And that involves furthering the progress of them.

So what are your goals for the year? Have you chosen a word of the year?
