You're The Star

Home sweet home! I love going away on vacation, but it is so great to return home. It was great to visit my mother last week. She is doing so much better, but it was nice to get back home and sleep in my own bed. This week's focus is home on the Star Hop.

Give Me Some Water

Gardening season has begun. Depending on where you live you may be starting seedlings, or you might just be planting things in the ground. It doesn't matter where you live, every gardener knows that water is important to their garden. But you don't always have to turn on the faucet to get that water. It may already be in your house.

I know some of you are saying this is another one of those crazy bits of info from a wacky environmental person. Yep, the shoe fits, so I'm wearing it.

But really there is a super easy way for you to get some extra fluid to water your plants that you normally would have poured right down the drain. At least I have in the past, but that is going to stop. I'm talking about the excess water from boiling eggs, and potatoes. Or for that matter any other vegetable.

Believe it or not, that water that you boiled your items in contains some extra nutrients that a great for plants. Water from boiled eggs contains a little extra bit of calcium. And plants like tomatoes and tomatillos absolutely love calcium. It's like a free fertilizer.

All you have to do is let the water from the items cool to room temperature. Make sure that it is cooled off, boiled water will kill the plants. But if you have sidewalk with some plants growing in the cracks. You could pour that water there, and you will kill off those weeds. Take the cooled water to your garden. And pour it on the plants. It is just that simple.

So don't let that water go to waste. Recycle it. And what other gardening tips do all of you have?

Adopt The Planet

Adopt the Planet is this year's Earth Day project by NASA. And it is a fun one. The goal of the project is to get the entire planet adopted by today April 22nd.

If you go to the site you will see a page where you can adopt a piece of land. Keep in mind you don't really own the land. It's just a spot they pick out. The land I adopted was somewhere in Brazil or Bolivia. It doesn't really give you the name, but it does give you the coordinates. So when I have more time, I'll see exactly where it is.

The page gives you information about the topography, in the area. It's pretty cool. And you can see satellite images of the areas. It takes some exploration of the site to understand what you are looking at. And you will also need to do some research outside of their site to be really knowledgeable about the maps. But the project gave me the opportunity to look at another area of the world and think about what is going on in that area.

So it's fun. And since Earth Day is today, this is a great way for you to find out a little bit more about how the world.

To Pinterest Or Not To Pinterest

I have to admit that I currently don't check pinterest very often. There was a time when I went to the site on a daily basis. I looked at all of the wonderful pictures. I looked at the items I wanted to make.

And then one day, I noticed something. My feed had several of the same pictures. I would go to look up something. And it would have at least three of the same pictures. Where was the creativity I loved? I decreased the time I was on the site.

Low and behold, I found that instead of looking at all of these things I wanted to make. I had actually started making my own items more often.

I found that I didn't feel as though my pictures were inferior to everyone else's. I found that I was actually taking more photos. I was looking at them more critically. I was improving some of the shots I was taking. I wasn't just thinking about what other people were doing. I was doing it myself.

This doesn't mean that I never go to pinterest any longer. It just means that when I go, I do it just for a short burst. There is something I'm looking for. It's not eating all of my time. And you know what, I really enjoy what I see a lot more. Even though I do seem to get many of the same photos in my feed.

Three Ways To Turn Your Day Around

Some days you get out of bed, and stub your toe. Then you trip over something. And then you can't find your favorite flavor of oatmeal because someone else ate it. Things just don't start out the way you want them to. And you have a choice to make let things continue the way they are. Or change the way it is going. If you are smart you will change the way things are going. The change you have to make is the attitude you have towards those little mishaps. Here are three ways to turn that day around.

Take a Look At The Good

Just because a few little things went wrong in the morning, it doesn't mean your entire day has to be bad. There are loads of good things that happened to you even though there have been lots of bad ones. For instance you were able to get out of bed that morning. Go to a hospital or local nursing home. You will find lots of people who would love to be able to jump out of bed. They just can't do it because they don't have the strength to do it.

Find Alternatives

Even though your favorite oatmeal is gone, you still have to eat breakfast. Try something different than you would normally eat. It might become your new favorite.

Laugh

There are just some things in life that you have to laugh at. You would have figured that so many little things could happen in so short a time. Run a mental image of yourself as you respond to these little things. You will probably find them quite funny.

Try these things and let me know if they give you a pick me up on those mornings that things just seem to be going the wrong way.

The Meeting Of The Geeks

Yes, last Saturday was Indiana Comic Con in Indianapolis, Indiana. One of my friends noticed this, and said we should go. How could I turn down this gathering. It was so close to home.
So vacation slips were filled out, and surprisingly, I got the time off I desired. The day approached and we agreed on a meeting time. We would depart at 8am on Saturday morning. Mornings are difficult so we started later than we planned. But soon the three geeks did arrive in Indianapolis.
Tickets were purchased, and the festivities began. There were costumes to see, items to be purchased. And of course comics to be read.
It's not every day you see Bender out walking around, so if you see him, you must get a photo.
There items I wanted, but felt that $225.00 that day was more than I could afford.
There were items I knew were not everyday finds. But alas I didn't really need them.
But overall, it was a day that reminded me that fitting into mainstream society is highly overrated.

Star Hop

Another Monday has arrived. I hope everyone had a Happy Easter! I spent time with my mom, well at least later in the evening I did. It's so hard for me to get up and going earlier in the day. It's just always weird to be awake when I am usually sleeping. Any other third shifters out there that understand what I'm saying? But we now have something to look forward to on Mondays the Star Blog Hop. This week we are focusing in on family.

There Is a Difference

Can I have some teriyaki sauce please? This is a Chinese restaurant not a Japanese restaurant. This was the conversation I heard the other day while I was waiting in line to pick up my carry out order. The guy who asked for the teriyaki sauce was doing this for his girlfriend. And you could hear her asking him across the room. Do you get some teriyaki? He kept trying to explain to her that they gave them so soy sauce, and that teriyaki sauce was served at Japanese restaurants. As they were carrying their order out the door, I heard the woman state. I don't understand why they didn't have teriyaki sauce.

It reminded me that there are so many times when we don't really understand the differences between people. Things all appear the same, but in reality there really is a difference.

Happy Easter

Happy Moments Of The Week

I saw someone wearing a pair of socks just like these the other day. I really liked the socks they were fun. And just ask anyone who knows me, I enjoy footwear of any kind. So these really caught my attention. I just didn't expect to see them on a guy.
The feeling you get when vacation Friday finally rolls around. The last day of the work week before your vacation is often the longest of the year. I had to force myself not to look at the clock every few minutes, but when it is time to clock out. You just want to jump up and down don't you? It's like I am free from all of this for a week.

Your first day at the park on a nice spring day. I went to the park this week, and it felt wonderful. The daffodils and tulips were blooming. And the park was actually crowded. It was fun to see all of those people at the park. And I always smile when I see individuals playing with a Frisbee. It's just a care free toy isn't it?

Realizing that you have met a goal. I completed some tasks that I wanted completed badly. It just felt good to be able to cross them off that list. I said to myself I did it!

So what has made your week good?

Thrifty Finds Week 15

Another week of thrifting has arrived. And once again I found some really great finds. I was talking with a friend a couple of weeks ago, and she told me she hates buying new clothes. They just cost so much. She wants to save her money, so she goes to the thrift stores and looks for items with price tags from stores. She says she always comes out with something brand new at a thrift store price. It's weird isn't it?
Here's the whole haul. Not a big one, but lots of great goodies.
For some reason this belt reminded me of disco. I love the metal feel and that it kind of had an accordion feel to it. Because it has the different layers to it I think. Maybe a slinky feel is a better description.
I finally broke down and bought a maxi dress. I now they have been the rage for a couple of years, but I saw this one, and I liked the colors. The blue and orange in the wavy pattern. And I really liked that the top of the dress had a crocheted band.
This my absolute favorite find of the week. I got a pair of pajama bottoms with raccoons on it. Raccoons are not good pets, and I had a few living my attic last year. They were a little costly to get rid of.  But they are truly adorable. And the pajama bottoms are so comfortable.
I liked the shape of this vase. It's a little different than what you normally find. And of course the price was right. And I have an idea for a little creation. We'll see how it turns out.
I love hats! And I always feel great when I find one that I really lie at a thrift store. And I liked the little buttons on the side of this one.

So how has your thrifting gone recently?

The Pansy

This year I tried a few different things for my garden. The first is I started some pansies from seedlings. I love the look of pansies. They are so colorful. And they are fairly hardy.
I decided after I took this picture that I should find out a little more about the flower itself. I wasn't surprised when I learned they are related to viola's. I always want to call pansies viola's because the leaves are shaped the same. But viola's are of course purple, and pansies come in a variety of colors.

I absolutely love that they so often have yellow and along with another color in the flower. And I never really thought about them being edible, but they are. They contain both vitamin A and C. Trying to figure out what I could add them to. I've never tasted them, but since I've decided to grow them from seedlings, this year I may add them to my salads.

Let me know what plants you plan on putting in your garden this year.

Sweet And Sour Tuna Spread

Sometimes you just want something super easy to prepare. You want it to taste different. And you want it to have a little kick. That's when it is time to raid your fridge and use some of the items you already have in the house. I ran through the cupboards and found this.

Here's What You'll Need

1/2 cup Whipped Cream Cheese
2 packets of tuna
1/2 cup sweet and sour sauce

Here's What You Do

Set your cream cheese out so that it is at room temperature. Add the three ingredients together and blend thoroughly. Next spread it on bread, crackers or wassa toast. And then enjoy.

Thanks For The Onion Flavored Gum

A friend or family member comes to visit your home. They tell you they have a present for you. You are excited. Gifts are always a great thing. It's in a gift bag with loads of tissue paper. There is a jar inside of the tissue paper. It's full of gum. You pop a piece in your mouth, and it's onion flavored. You say thanks! But you don't mean it.

Have you ever received one of those gifts that you just don't like? Have you ever felt disappointed when you received a gift? Then here are a few things to remember when you receive those disappointing gift.

Talent

Some people just have a knack for picking out the perfect gifts. They are able to remember exactly what suits you. They are those people that just remember those little conversations where you casually mention something you like. For ever person that has this talent. There are probably ten who don't. Some people just aren't talented gift givers.

Enjoyment

Some people just love giving gifts. They are those born givers in life. They enjoy the entire process. They enjoy picking out a gift. They enjoy wrapping the gift, and they enjoy the look on your face when they give you the gift. They usually pick the right gift. And they give them often. Yep! These people exist. Most people aren't like that. Many individuals just grab a gift because they have to. They do want to give the gift in a way, but it just isn't their thing.

Relationship

There are some individuals who want to give you a gift, but they are always just stumped when it comes to what to give you. They may not know you well enough to know what you like, or they may be unsure of what you will like. Remember these people are giving, but they just don't know what to give.

Keep these things in mind the next time you receive that gift you just don't like. Remember the gift is exactly that a gift. Individuals aren't required to give gifts. Just be thankful that you received something. If you take on that attitude, you may find that you actually enjoy that onion flavored gum you received.

Mama's Knight

There are books for children, and there are special books for children. Mama's Knit is a special book for children.

The Book

This book is a help book for children who have a mother with cancer. This book provides the guideline for open and honest discussions about a parents illness. It provides honest information about treatments, and how sick those treatments may make a mother feel. And it encourages the parent and child to express their feelings about this. The book also encourages the parent and child to participate in some creative activities to express their emotions. I really liked the section where they put together a story together. It allows for a child and parent to remain connected in a difficult time for both of them.

This book is a great book for any child who has a parent that is going through cancer treatments. But when I think about it, it could be useful for adults who are facing these situations too. Let's face it, when it comes to our relationships with our parents we all revert to children when things become extremely stressful. So many of the activities would assist adult children too.

I really liked the illustrations, they are simple. And the page with information about treatments was extremely well done.

The Author

Aurora is the author of the Bloodmark Saga series. She is also an illustrator. You can learn more about her and the trilogy by clicking the link above.
