How Do You Use That Time?

Have you ever had times when you are forced into doing nothing? Times when you are forced to wait on something? Off the top of my head I can think of two places when this happens to me. One of them is at the laundromat. Part of the time you are busy, but most of the time you are just waiting. You are kind of forced into a period of motionlessnes. You have time to think. There’s nothing to do, but let your mind wander while you wait for the washer or dryer to finish. And then you are forced into action when the timers go off.

You’re The Star Blog Hop

Have you ever had a time when you imagine the worst? I mean like your imagination goes wild. And pretty soon you have imagined the world's worst scenario? And then you feel stupid when everything works out just fine. That happened to me the other day. I knew deep down that everything was going to be okay, but I was just growing impatient. I wanted something right now! And I wasn't getting it! Or is it a lack of trust in individuals? Maybe a combo of both, but the point is I caused myself a lot of anxiety over nothing. And thank goodness it all worked out well. Hope everything is going well for all of you.

Mistress Shakespeare

It’s not a new topic, but it is always an interesting one. Who was Shakespeare’s muse? This is the topic of Karen Harper’s historical novel, Mistress Shakespeare.

The Story

A young Will Shakespeare falls in love with Anne Whateley. The couple are betrothed, and a few days later he is forced to marry the pregnant Anne Hathaway. Of course his true love is heart broken, but she decides to build a life without Will. But she just can’t forget him. And when he moves to London their relationship is renewed. It shows the good and bad of their relationship that lasts a lifetime.

What I Think

I enjoyed reading this book. I enjoyed that was told from Anne’s perspective. I liked that there is a historical background for the story. There really are records that indicate that Will and Anne were betrothed. I liked how it points out the politics behind being an artist in that era. And it made me wonder if things are like that for some artists now. This book will be great for individuals who are fans of Shakespeare. And of course for those who are looking for a well written historical romance.

Captain’s Dream

Guest Blogger Captain the Cat

Over the course of my lifetime I have had several dreams. But at this point in time I have a new dream. I have heard humans refer to something called a bucket list, and this new dream is on my feline bucket list.

Over the years I have watched my pet human opening a large metal box in the kitchen. From this box humans pull many savory items. I have seen chicken and tuna emerge from what my pet refers to as a refrigerator.

I have decided that it is time for me to be able to obtain items from this magical metal container without the assistance of a human. I decided this the other day when I moved to look in this box when the door opened. My human tells me to move. I only wanted to see what was in there.

So I need to know how does a feline open this door. I need assistance from any felines who have accomplished this goal of digging through the refrigerator. Please help me with my dream.

That Purse

Have you ever had a striking reminder that one section of the population doesn’t know how the rest of the world lives. I had the opportunity to go to a vintage designer purse sale. It happens once a year at one of the local stores. I also want you all to keep in mind that I have been thinking of buying a newer vehicle. We’ll get back to that a little later.

I got to the store as I was instructed in the invite. I was second in line. I wanted the freebie that was promised for attending this sale. Other people were in line were as excited as I was. It was an adventure waiting to happen.

The doors opened and we entered the store. The purses were displayed. There were Louis Vuitton, Prada, and Dior. All of the purses that have been on the pages of Vogue. All of them were sitting in front of us. We could touch these babies. We could see them in person without the aid of a photograph. They were beautiful. They were jumping off the display cases into the arms of individuals. The cashiers were busy scanning those credit cards. I was eating the free breakfast that was provided. And I saw the purse in the picture. It was calling my name. I picked it up. It was pricey. At the moment I saw the price I thought of the truck I mentioned earlier. I thought I could buy this little truck for less than the purse. I put the purse down, and I thought to myself do any of the individuals purchasing these purses must not have to make the decisions I do. I left the store and I thought to myself I really want the truck more than the purse. But today I am not getting either.

What Would The World Be Like?

Have you ever imagined what the world would be like if just one thing were different? I do it all the time. And last week I was wondering just what the world be like if the unicorns were running all the meetings in the world? Imagine how fun that could be huh?
I think this guy is planning his take over of the world!

Perfect Cut Flowers

Soon there will be loads of flowers in all of our gardens. And if you are like me,you will want to bring some of them into the house to brighten up a room. Here’s a few simple things you can do to create the perfect cut flowers.

Cut your flowers in the morning. It’s cooler and the flowers will be at their freshest.

Use a clean vase, and fill it with fresh cool water. If you want your arrangement to last longer change the water and snip the stems daily.

Before you arrange your flowers, recut the stems under water at an angle. If the stems are woody, make an additional vertical cut into the stems.

Remove the leaves from the stems. Make sure it’s only stems under water.

Keep the arrangement away from direct sunlight.

Enjoy those fresh cut flowers!

You’re The Star

Don't you just love it when your computer decides it needs to update? I don't know about you guys, but it always happens when I have the least amount of time to deal with it. I know it doesn't but I always feel like it takes forever to update. And then my schedule is thrown off for the afternoon. That happened today. And of course I was running late to begin with. But the updates are completed and I am able to share with you this minor rant.

How The Cotton Industry Was Saved

Once upon a time all clothing was made from natural fabrics. Cotton, linen and silk were staples of a wardrobe. But there was a problem cotton fabrics wrinkled. And this caused everyone to have to do that beloved chore called ironing.

Then the 1930’s rolled around and in the years surrounding it there were some new inventions rayon, polyester, and nylon. These fabrics were miraculous! They didn’t require ironing. And clothing companies latched on to this. They marketed these fabrics. And by the 1970’s, the cotton textile industry felt the change. It’s sales were declining.

Now anyone who has worn some of those unnatural fabrics knows that there are a few down falls with these fabrics. The main one being they don’t breathe. In other words, you sweat a lot when you wear these fabrics. Cotton is just cooler in the summer.

But in 1969 a lady named Ruth Benerito developed an additive that smoothed the fibers of cotton. The result was the wash and wear cotton fabric. She saved the cotton industry, and her research led to developing flame resistant fabric.

You Know It’s Spring When

There are always signs that a new season has arrived. Sometimes you notice the signs immediately. And some of them you realize after a few times that something occurs. Here are a few of the things I have noticed recently that made me realize spring has finally arrived.

The first thing I noticed this year was the annual blessing of the bikes. I’m not a biker, but I know you have a hard time riding in the winter. And every year someone blesses the bikes in the spring. I’ve never been to it but it does sound like fun.

I feel a need to stop by Menard’s on a regular basis. You know I have to pickup seeds for the garden, and of course see what flowers are available. I rarely go to the hardware stores in the winter.

I’ve also noticed that I’m arriving places five minutes sooner than I planned. Could it be that it takes less time to get places because I don’t have to put on a winter coat and search for my gloves?

And I can be out at seven o’clock at night and wonder why it’s still light out? Then I realize it’s spring and the days are getting longer.

Composting Do’s and Don’ts

Spring means getting out in that yard and cleaning it up. At least if you own a home, that’s what it means. And everyone with a garden knows that there is a lot of material for that compost pile, which is necessary if you want beautiful flowers and vegetables. Here are a few composting do’s and don’ts for the beginner gardener.

Do Get Started

Start composting in the spring for the best results. Make sure to mix nitrogen rich like green leaves and grass clippings with carbon rich items like bark and newspaper.

Don’t Be Wasteful

Make sure you send the waste from the vegetables and fruit you use in meals out to the compost pil.

Don’t Feed The Wildlife

Don’t put meat, fish or dairy products in your compost. It will attract scavengers. But coffee grounds, tea bags and egg shells will feed your compost.

Do Tear

When you add newspapers and cardboard to your pile make sure you tear it into smaller pieces. It makes the decomposition process move along more smoothly.

Do Cover It Up

Covering your compost speeds up the process by keeping heat and moisture i. Don’t forget to use a fork or shovel to turn your compost to make it cook faster.

So what are you waiting for go start your compost pile.

The Great Outfit Hunt

If you have read my earlier posts, you know that I love thrifting. I love a great deal, and I love finding the items at places where the items may be tossed out. Thrifting is kind of a hobby. But I decided to show all of you how I put together some of my fantastic outfits and decide what to look for when I go a thrifting. So the great outfit hunt will begin.

If I am wanting something pretty fashionable. I get a fashion magazine. And pick out an outfit like the one below.
I liked the outfit in this picture from Vogue. An outfit like this is well out of my price range I am sure. But with a little thrifting, and a lot of imagination, I may be able to come up with something that is pretty similar. And of course it will be much more in my budget. So I will show you the progress on this outfit as it goes along. Hopefully, it will be an outfit I can put together soon.

Counting Sheep

Have you ever been out shopping with a friend, and you stumble across something that just makes you both laugh. I mean real unexpected laughter. That's what happened the other day when I was at Rekindle with my friend. My friend looked down at started laughing, and said that is so cute. It was good to hear my friend laugh because she has had so many challenges recently. But here is what really what made us laugh.

You're The Star Blog Hop

I am so glad this week seems to be running a bit smoother. People have returned from vacation at work, and I have not had to work overtime so far. And I'm glad to say I have been spending some time in my yard working. How can there be so many leaves even though I fill up bag after bag of leaves. In the fall, I will not put off raking until the spring. The daffodils and tulips have popped up, and they will flower soon. And I made that first trip too the store to pick up items for the garden. Spring is wonderful isn't it?

Paid But Still Broke

Being an adult means different things to different people. And there are loads of signs that you’re an adult. But one sure sign of adulthood is when you’re paid but still broke.

There always seems to come a point in most people’s lives when they decide they are tired of having the power shut off, and they decide to buckle down. The sad part of life begins where paying the bills on time becomes more important than a new outfit or a night out on the town.

It’s always a sad day when you make that decision, but somehow a time comes when you aren’t totally broke on your payday. You breathe a sigh of relief. The worst of becoming an adult is over. And you realize that you can spend a little extra money, and you can set aside some for the day a catastrophe occurs. And you think about that day you decided that it was time to become an adult.

Is Aging Taken Too Seriously?

You survived another year, yet you're ashamed of your achievement? That happens so frequently. I hear individuals say I am getting old. I have heard older individuals say they have nothing left to offer.

I have always enjoyed my birthday. And I have never understood why individuals don’t. I believe age is primarily in your mind. I have wondered if individuals who don’t enjoy their birthdays are simply afraid. Are they afraid of what is coming? Or is it that they feel they have lost something.

I really don’t know the answer to those questions. But I do believe that we do take aging way too seriously. Each day is a new opportunity to enjoy what is offered to us.

April Goals 2018

April has arrived! I am so thankful. The weather is a little warmer and things are starting to grow. And my faithful followers know that a new month means I need to set some new goals in my life. And first I need to review the goals for the month of March.

Drawer

My first goal was to clean out one of the drawers in my bathroom. I did this. I had a receipt from 2010 in that drawer. Why didn’t I throw some of that junk away sooner? And I found loads of little soaps. I don’t need to buy any of those any time soon.

Leaves

Those leaves are a constant problem in my yard. I have cleaned up a lot of them. But somehow there are still loads of them. It’s still a work in progress.

Accordion book

I decided to work on a chunky art journal instead of an accordion book. I did get it started. But somehow it to time consuming. It’s a work in progress. But I am enjoying working on it.

Get out of town

I did take a really short day trip. It took an afternoon and went to a nearby small town. I found a great thrift store. And a building I loved. The driving time was also a great time to think through some things. All in all it was really relaxing. The hiccup came when I was forced to work an extra day that week. I didn’t have time to get my laundry done. So I was crunched for time on another day.

Now the goals for the new month.

Just Cuz Gifts

I love giving gifts. And this month I want to give gifts just because it’s fun. It doesn’t have to be a special occasion.

The Garden

This month I want to work in the garden three times a week. There is planting and tidying to do. I wish I could do it everyday, but I think three times a week is more realistic.

There is a really cute idea I have for a small upcycled outfit. It should be super easy. And the outcome will be so kawaii.

Figure Out How To Say No

I’m struggling with having to do too much especially at work. I know the rules aren’t being followed and I am being taken advantage of some times. How do I address this without loosing my temper? It needs to be figured out this month.

Tee Shirt Pillow

I've had this thing for unicorns the past couple of months. Don't quite understand it myself. I've never really been a big fan in the past. Maybe it's just that I am participating in a fad, or maybe I just need something a little magical in my life right now. That doesn't really matter, the point of this post is a do it yourself project. I wanted a little pillow with a unicorn, but I couldn't find exactly what I wanted. I was at the thrift store, and I saw a cute little tee shirt. The price was right, it was under a dollar. I grabbed it. That's where I started.

When I got it home, I did a little pinning. I decided on the size of the pillow, and laid out the format for me to cut out the pattern.
Once I had that laid out I was able to cut out my pillow sides. I wound up with something like this.
Then I flipped the unicorn pattern so it was facing down. Then I whipped out the needle and thread. I started the sewing process. I sewed up three sides of the pillow.
Once that is accomplished you can add that stuffing. Then add some stuffing to the pillow, and sew up the bottom. I had some yarn around the house so I decided to make tassels for the corners of the pillow. This is how it turned out. It's a super easy, and cute little pillow to meet that unicorn craving I'm going through.

You're The Star Blog Hop

This week we celebrated Easter. And Easter always gives me a shot in the arm. It is the true beginning of spring I think. I always feel a need to spend more time outdoors. And I want there to be more sunlight. Spring fever has set in big time. I want warm weather. And I want to break out warm weather clothes. Does anybody else out there have spring fever as bad as I do?
